Lead Designer & Illustrator – Major League Fishing

Position Summary:

Major League Fishing is in search of a talented professional in our Benton, Kentucky office to manage and execute all design, illustration, layout and photo-fulfillment processes for the Major League Fishing BIG5 brands. The Lead Designer & Illustrator will lead the creative effort for all MLF BIG5 print and digital publications and contribute daily to revenue-focused projects across multiple MLF departments and platforms.

Design & layout – MLF Bass Fishing magazine: This position’s primary print responsibilities include design and layout of MLF Bass Fishing magazine (six times yearly), with focus on dynamic, original feature layout and attention to cutting-edge design elements. Includes feature illustration, studio photography to support written content, and coordination of freelance photographers and illustrators with MLF Senior Director and Executive Editor, Managing Editor, and Production Manager to produce high-quality magazine elements.

Photography & photo fulfillment – MLF BIG5: As part of the MLF BIG5 tournament coverage and primary manager of MLF BIG5 photo assets, this position occasionally travels to tournaments to shoot and manage photos, and remotely manages all BIG5 photo assets. Includes editing and uploading photos for daily tournament galleries, maintaining sponsor/client photo database, and fulfilling photo requests from both external media and internal stakeholders. The Lead Designer & Illustrator also assists with digital asset management and photo requests outside of tournaments. Includes photographing products, people and events as needed for print and digital media.

Illustration & project support – MLF BIG5: Additional responsibilities include creation of feature illustrations and logos for sales/marketing support; management of other high-value design projects within the organization; design of advertisements and sales materials for MLF BIG5 merchandise, and various illustration/design projects as assigned.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Establish the creative vision and style for MLF BIG5 print projects and MLF BIG5 content franchises.
  • Manage high-value print and digital design projects.
  • Produce print and digital layouts on time and within budget.
  • Manage multiple deadline projects at once within established timeline.
  • Conceptualize new and interesting designs that maintain and elevate brand standards for the organization.
  • Create unique, original illustrations and photographs.
  • Manage organization’s photo/imagery processes, including editing, uploading to website, organization, and both inside and outside fulfillment of image requests.
  • Coach and develop staff and freelance contributors to help improve content.
  • Utilize all applicable design and photo editing software with expert proficiency.
  • Occasional video production as needed
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by Sr. Director & Executive Editor

Performance Requirements/Skills

  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and contribute to multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as with a team.
  • Knowledge of tournament bass fishing is helpful, but not required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required.


  • Minimum 3+ years professional experience in print/publication layout, design, illustration and project management, as well as a proven track record of creative conceptualization in an agency or full-time editorial capacity.
  • Experience with content management systems.
  • Photography and photo-editing experience is a must.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud software programs, QuarkXPress, Microsoft Office and industry-standard file-sharing services.
  • Three to five years’ experience in print/publication layout, design, illustration and project management, as well as a proven track record of creative conceptualization in an agency or full-time editorial capacity.
  • Bachelor’s degree in photography, graphic design, or related fields.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

Normal office environment. Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity enough to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires mobility enough to travel.
