Celebrating 30 Years of Outdoor Channel with Chris Dorsey of ‘Sporting Classics TV’

OSG Email Signature_ALL LOGOS_2024

DENVER (August 2, 2024) – The Outdoor Channel is celebrating its milestone 30th anniversary, and who better to reflect on this monumental occasion than Chris Dorsey, the prominent host of Sporting Classics with Chris Dorsey. With decades of unparalleled dedication to outdoor programming, Dorsey shares his insights on how the landscape has evolved, the impact of technological advancements, and the cherished memories that have shaped the show's history.

Q&A with Chris Dorsey

Q: Chris, as someone who's been in the industry for many years, how have you seen the TV landscape, particularly outdoor programming, change over the last 30 years?

A: "To give you some perspective, when we started in outdoor TV nearly 30 years ago, there was no social media to speak of. To say the media landscape in general and the TV world in specific has changed since then would be a significant understatement. I go back to the TNN and ESPN outdoor days with very large universes and audiences on cable. While a good show can still find an audience, TV is generally just part of the content delivery equation. The good news is that video is still the universal donor of content feeding most media platforms from TV and social to YouTube and streaming."

Q: What are some of the biggest technological advancements that have impacted how outdoor shows are produced and consumed today?

A: "The proliferation of specialty cameras that can go almost anywhere, from underwater to overhead with drones, has really transformed the viewer experience with outdoor content. Giving viewers a realistic sense of what a distant landscape looks like or capturing the intimacy of a close encounter with an epic beast is expected today. I remember hauling a portable jib across Africa 20 years ago to give some movement to otherwise static scenes. We were quite proud of those jib moves, which is almost laughable today given what a drone can capture. When it comes to finding your favorite content, you often have to extend your hunting skills to a wide assortment of platforms and apps, for there is some great content out there, but finding it isn't always easy."

Q: Can you share some key changes or milestones in the show’s history that stand out to you?

A: "We like to find global bucket list adventures and then do justice to the unique experiences by making the landscape as well as the wildlife stars of the shows. We decided to bring our mainstream cable TV production values and sensibilities to the outdoor genre because it's the category that means the most to me as a lifelong outdoorsman, conservationist, and biologist. We decided early on that it wasn't enough to call something a sporting classic; we need to immerse viewers in these places and the amazing experiences and critters found there."

Q: Looking back, what are some of your favorite memories from the TV series?

A: "Setting off to faraway places to catch or hunt remarkable species is always captivating, but when we traveled to Ethiopia to hunt mountain nyala in the cloud forest above 10,000 feet, the trip certainly ranks as one of my favorites. A bighorn sheep hunt in Alberta was another one that stands out, for it provided everything a mountain hunt can offer—dramatic landscapes, four seasons in a day, a little danger, and an unforgettable conclusion."

Q: What guest appearances or collaborations have been particularly memorable for you?

A: "Having grown up a fan of the Apollo missions, it was a special treat to share a South Dakota pheasant field with General Charles Duke, the youngest man to walk on the moon. Joining me on that same shoot was Marine General Walt Boomer. The two men were in their 80s yet hiked across those Dakota fields better than many men half their ages. The stories they shared, the history they lived and saw, made for some special campfire fodder. I've shot a lot of pheasants in my life, but never with better company."

Q: How has the partnership with the Outdoor Channel been instrumental in the success of Sporting Classics with Chris Dorsey?

A: "Outdoor Channel has been a good partner for Sporting Classics and, even in a tough landscape, has maintained a high standard of production value. I think the brands see that, and I know viewers get that, for when your passion is the outdoors, you know when the information is accurate and when the action is authentic."

Join us in celebrating 30 years of excellence in outdoor programming. Follow along with Chris Dorsey and Sporting Classics crew as they continue to bring the beauty and thrill of the great outdoors into homes around the world.

‘Bowhunter TV’ Celebrates 20th Season on Outdoor Channel

OSG Email Signature_ALL LOGOS_2024

Series Continues to Inspire Countless Bowhunters with Host, Curt Wells

DENVER (July 15, 2024) – Bowhunter TV, a pioneering show dedicated to the art and adventure of bowhunting, proudly marks its 20th season on Outdoor Channel this summer airing Thursdays at 10:30 p.m. ET. This milestone celebrates two decades of capturing the bowhunting experience in a truthful, documentary style that has captivated audiences and inspired countless bowhunters across the globe.

Launched in late summer of 2004, Bowhunter TV was the brainchild of the “Bowhunter Magazine” team, led by current President & CEO Mike Carney, and the late Editor Dwight Schuh. The show was initially produced by Larry D. Jones, a pioneer in hunting videos, known for his work on "Elk Fever." Together, they set out to document the ingenuity and determination that define the bowhunting spirit.

Curt Wells, who famously crossed a river using a homemade cable car to access a remote spot in Minnesota to get the show’s first Pope & Young class whitetail during season one, continues this tradition as the host today. His commitment to showcasing the genuine bowhunting experience has established Bowhunter TV as a staple in the hunting community.

Reflecting on the series' evolution, Wells says it is difficult to pick a single memory that stands out as there were so many good moments. “Choosing a favorite moment among 20 years of adventure is tough but several stand out. Like experiencing the true wilderness of the McKenzie Mountains in the Northwest Territories or the wilds of the Yukon, stalking a grizzly in Alaska, and hunting caribou against the backdrop of Greenlandic glaciers. Every hunt has been special in its own way, but finally taking a massive Yukon moose, watching my grandson arrow his first bear, and sharing elk camp in Arizona with my two sons are all highlights among the countless adventures.”

On the show's impact over the years, Wells highlights its educational segments such as “Dead On,” “Better Bowhunter,” and “Moment of Truth.” "Our hope is to leave the viewer knowing something about bowhunting that they didn’t know previously," he adds.

For its 20th season, viewers can expect more of the same thrilling adventures and educational content that have made Bowhunter TV a fan favorite. "We have evolved with the times when it comes to technical advancements," Wells explains. "But it is still about being in the wild, getting close to game, raising our heart rate, and enjoying the bowhunting experience."

When it comes to the future of Bowhunter TV, Wells remains optimistic. "As long as there are people out there who want to become bowhunters, Bowhunter TV will be there to do our part to help make that happen."

Celebrate two decades of bowhunting adventures with Bowhunter TV by tuning in Thursdays nights at 10:30 p.m. ET on the Outdoor Channel and join the community of passionate bowhunters who appreciate the thrill of the hunt and the beauty of the great outdoors.

Their insightful exchange offers a deep dive into the evolution of outdoor television, the impact of technological advancements, and the cherished memories that have shaped their careers.

Bill Jordan, founder of Realtree and a pioneer in outdoor television, reflects on the remarkable changes over the past three decades. "You know, one of the neat things for me is seeing the transition in television. We've been in this space for a long time, and while social media has grown, I still love the experience of sitting down and watching a full, 30-minute outdoor show," said Jordan.

Jordan shares that even after over 30 years of producing outdoor TV, he's still within his original goals of bringing entertaining and educating outdoor TV to hunters. "As I get a little bit older and reflect back, I enjoy what we do here at Realtree Outdoors because I want the young people to see that the outdoors can be entertaining and to get them more involved in the space."

David Blanton, who Bill Jordan brought on to start Realtree's TV video department, shared his unique perspective on how outdoor television has evolved since its inception." When we began Realtree Outdoors on TNN in 1993, which took us three years to get there, we were among the first to show real hunting impacts on national television. This was a game-changer and set us apart," Blanton explained.

But starting a show back then wasn't as cost-effective, as Blanton shared. "The cost of a camera that was high enough quality to pass the requirements to be on national television was the beta SP formats. And they were $40,000 to $50,000 per camera!" Blanton also thinks viewers' tastes have changed over the past three decades. "We've been challenged to do a better job, create more content with more shot angles, use more GoPros, and maybe tell a story better. The average viewer today wants more of the backstory, and so we're trying now to give a little more of the storyline, as opposed to what we may have done in the early days."

Reflecting on his favorite memories, Jordan fondly recalled hunting experiences with his children and celebrity guests like Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr., as well as Chipper Jones. "Sharing that first hunting experience with my kids is probably the most memorable. It's just to see the excitement in their eyes and seeing a kid really enjoy the outdoors. And outside of that, it's been hunting with friends like Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. and sharing those stories with our audience. It has been incredibly fulfilling," said Jordan. He continued to share that many fans expressed how 'easy' it must've been to hunt with celebrities. Still, Jordan stresses it's all about the love of the outdoors. "And people say, 'Well, you're hunting with this country singer or that.' You know, that is true. But the message we want to portray is these guys love the outdoors. The outdoors brought us all together. We didn't go after them. They came out to do something and share their passion; it's the same passion we have."

Blanton also reminisced about memorable moments with celebrated personalities like Dale Earnhardt Sr., emphasizing the honor of being part of the Outdoor Channel's remarkable 30-year legacy. "Looking back, one of my favorite memories of Realtree Outdoors was the time we spent with the late Dale Earnhardt. I'll never forget when he came to Georgia to hunt turkeys with Bill and me in the spring, a few days before the Talladega race. He came over to hunt that morning, and the weather was bad. He kept checking with the track to make sure they weren't going to practice, and all of a sudden, we stopped somewhere. He called the track, and they said, 'Dale, we are literally drying the track off. They're about to start practicing' and Dale's sitting over here turkey hunting with us in West Central Georgia. Before you know it, we are flying to the airport. His plane is waiting for him. I've never seen Dale Earnhardt sweating bullets like he was that day because he was about to be late to Talladega only because of a goblin' turkey."

Celebrating the Outdoor Channel's milestone, Jordan expressed gratitude for the platform that has allowed them to share their passion for the outdoors. "The Outdoor Channel has been heaven-sent for us, allowing us to tell authentic outdoor stories. It's given people a chance to see the beauty and excitement of the outdoors," said Jordan. And Blanton agrees, "It's such an honor to be a part of so many incredible personalities, figures, and production companies that put forth award-winning programming on the Outdoor Channel.”
