DENVER (October 25, 2023) – Most Alaskans will agree the area can be unforgiving and harsh at its worst. Still, its unpredictability showcases its honesty, as seen in Outdoor Channel's original docu-series Life on the Edge, airing Fridays at 9 p.m. ET. The series chronicles the lives of fearless homesteaders as they live off the grid in some of the harshest terrain in the world – the Aleutian Islands. The Aleutians are known as the "Cradle of Storms" and occupy an area of 6,900 miles.

Captain Charlie Summerville and his family are in the center of Life on the Edge – his wife, Helen, and two daughters, Samantha and Stephanie. To Capt. Charlie, a -30 below-degree day is just another day in paradise.

Capt. Charlie recently shared with The Revolution with Jim and Trav more about the new series and their hunting-fishing-guiding business located in Cold Bay. When Charlie got the call from Rare TV, the series producers, he explained that he only wanted to showcase real life with nothing scripted or staged – and they agreed.

Capt. Charlie Summerville came to Alaska in 1985 at 19 years old from upstate New York with a few hundred dollars and a willingness to do any job to survive. He eventually started guiding wilderness raft trips, built lodges, and created several guiding businesses. An expert pilot, angler, hunter, craftsman, and so much more, Capt Charlie is the first to say he has a love-hate relationship with Alaska. "There is no room for forgiveness here; bush Alaska has no conscience. It will do everything it can to kill you and dishearten you. You see all the prettiness with the bears and eagles, and then suddenly, you are working on a flat tire on the four-wheeler in below-zero winds, and the generator just went out. And you realize this isn't fun anymore."

There is a saying on the Aleutian Islands, "They don’t teach you this at Harvard Business School," and Charlie agrees. In the series, viewers will see Captain Charlie take on the most significant challenge he's ever faced, building an epic new wilderness lodge right in the middle of brown bear and wolf territory. His new lodge will gaze upon a stunning bay. It will be the prime location for experiencing and helping to conserve the region's extraordinary wildlife. From shipping in his materials in 90 mph winds to erecting the lodge’s timber frame in sub-zero temperatures, this is an epic construction challenge – even for someone like him.

“This season, viewers will see all it takes to get the cabins built from start to finish – from bears getting close, boats getting sunk – it is not staged,” shared Capt. Charlie. “There is no help here. We are 600 miles from any real help, so we must help ourselves and be smart. Viewers will see all of that.”

The series is already filming season two and will showcase the new adventures the Summerville family faces now their lodges are built and ready for customers.

The entire series is based on the unforgiving Igiugig (a 9,000-year-old native community) Umnak (home to America’s most remote cowboys), and Volcano Bay (quite literally THE most remote homestead in America).

Call Him a Novelist – Outdoor Sportsman Group Applauds Jim Shockey’s Book, ‘Call Me Hunter,’ Available Now

DENVER (October 24, 2023) – Jim Shockey is an outdoor writer, professional big game outfitter, TV producer, and host of several series on Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel and MyOutdoorTV. Still, his most recent accolade is a novelist with the release of his first novel, "Call Me Hunter," published by Simon and Schuster. The book demonstrates Shockey's literary talent while it weaves a story about a hunter and an elite secret society and what one man will do whatever it takes to save his daughter's soul.

Shockey was recently on the Petersen’s Hunting Podcast, sharing the novel’s early beginnings and how he started in the outdoor industry. From age ten, he said he always wanted to write a book, but he "needed to live more life first." Shockey said it all started in 1984 when he wrote his first magazine article and received $42 for it, which, at that time, was a big deal. He said back then, articles were trending from adventurous stories to more "how-to" pieces, which he didn't appreciate as much. "I remember reading a magazine at the time and thinking to myself, 'I can do better,'" he said. Shockey said he always had a tremendous desire to write, travel, and enjoy different cultures; that is where he focused his life.

From there, he began to video his hunts. He knew Realtree’s Bill Jordan well and was soon hosting a segment on Jordan's show on ESPN. Soon after, other networks, such as TNN and Outdoor Channel, began and needed content. Shockey said it was an obvious transition from magazines to media. He shared that "it is just storytelling in a different media. I learned how to shoot and edit in the '90s on a show called 'Canadian Whitetail Adventures.' It cost $50,000 to film and edit at the time – and that was in 90's dollars!" Shockey said he eventually asked Outdoor Channel for his own show – and they agreed. He bought the airtime and produced the shows still available today on MyOutdoorTV, such as Jim Shockey’s Hunting Adventures, Jim Shockey’s The Professionals, UNCHARTED, and his most recent series Shock Therapy.

Shockey said he's been writing "Call Me Hunter" in his head for many years – from waiting in lines at airport security to sitting on mountain tops, and the book needed to come out. He told Petersen's Hunting Podcast he started writing the book in fall 2019 and calls it an 'abstract thriller.' "If this book is a success, it will open the door for more writing like this and more thinking like this. And ultimately, that will be good for wildlife, which is my goal."

"Call Me Hunter" is available for purchase now wherever books are sold, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and more. Shockey said the publisher, Simon and Schuster, plan on printing 125,000 copies of the book, which is unheard of for a first-time novelist.

“We are going to need all the hunters to support the book. I have high hopes it will open doors that have been closed to us for a long time,” concluded Shockey.
