Zach Henry, the ‘Southern Lawn Daddy,’ Talks about Sod, Game Day and God’s Grace on ‘The Michael Waddell Podcast’

Zach Henry and Waddell Discuss Striving to Make Your Lawn and Your Life the Best It Can Be

DENVER (July 1, 2026) – Join Host Michael Waddell as he sits down with popular content creator Zachary Henry, who, along with his lovely wife Morgan and young family, stars in the “Southern Lawn Daddy” (SLD) short-form video series on TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and other social media outlets. Zach and Morgan got their “Lawntok” start in the summer of 2024 on TikTok and Instagram with some humorous lawncare content that resonated with viewers and ultimately went viral. Their SLD channel has experienced amazing growth, and today they’ve got over 700,000 followers and their passionate brand of lawncare, backyard projects and family-oriented lifestyle content has been seen and appreciated by millions. While the Southern Lawn Daddy has plenty of grass mowing and fertilizing tips, and he surely can help turn your yard into a veritable putting green, SLD is about so much more than excelling at yard work, and Zach Henry is our special guest on this episode of The Michael Waddell Podcast, presented by Spandau Arms and in partnership with Folds of Honor, Cigars International and Poncho Outdoors. Born and raised in northern Georgia, the Southern Lawn Daddy specializes in warm-weather grasses like Bermuda grass, but he has plenty of experience with cool-weather varieties, and his nonstop pursuit of lawn perfection went viral on social media from the very start.

“I already had a knack for grass,” Zach explained, “just because we built the house – we didn’t have two nickels to rub together – and for some reason we ended up with sod. That was around the time of Covid, so I was like, ‘What can you do when the world is shut down? Go outside and cut grass!’ We were in the midst of, kind of in that weird lull between, it’s not hunting season but it’s close and you need to be ramping up, and I was like, ‘I’m going to start taking a liking to my grass.’ We had just had my daughter, and I was like, ‘I can’t do anything inside other than watch my daughter nap.’ She’s feeding, nursing and whatnot. I’m just a butt wiper and a babysitter at this point, but in the midst of all that, ‘I’m going to go out here and cut grass. I’m going to hone in on that. That’s my little release. I’ve got this little quarter-acre tract – it’s mine. I’m going to do the best that I can with it.’”

Recognizing the sense of pride that Zach expresses through his lawncare and lawn mowers, Waddell jokingly suggested that he probably power washes his greens mower and displays it prominently for the neighbors to see. “I’ve been known to do it,” Zach admitted. “It’s a weird flex, but yeah, I do it. I’ve been known to do it. Especially like on a Saturday… That’s a big game day, too. I kind of always roll it around like, Saturday is a game day. That’s when you turn it on. You can do anything you want until then. It’s all practice up until Saturday. But on Saturday, we’re getting out there and we’re going to cut grass. We’re going to put stripes in it. We’re going to lay down the law. …It is a pride thing. I take pride in it. You take care of something that you spent your money on. That’s what I kind of took from all this. This was my house – I finally had a big boy house. I have a family. I’m spending money on it. It wasn’t given to me. We worked our butt off for it. Take pride in it. Enjoy it. Like it. But make it your own. That’s what I wanted to do with the grass. I’m just going to make it the best it can possibly be. Even if it isn’t the best out the box – it ain’t the best you can buy off a sod farm – but I’m going to cultivate it. I’m going to make it. …Something can be as good as what you make it, but you’ve got to make it. You’ve got to put in the time and the effort.”

“That’s what I find is beautiful about it,” Zach continued. “Like our page – we could have been a one and done, one-trick pony. But consistency and just being after it all the time [has made it happen]. That’s what we wanted to do. We wanted to be raw. We wanted to be uncut, because what you see in our videos and stuff, that’s how we are in real life. We’re real-life people. We have problems. We have issues. If I don’t take the trash out, I get scolded. If she goes out there, she’s going to let me know that she took the trash out. It ain’t all rainbows and butterflies. But, I mean, it’s life, and I think that’s what people really truly enjoy seeing – a young couple, I mean, I say I’m young, I’m 35… But with me and her and how we are, we just feed off one another, and I can tell if I’m really excited about something, she’s really excited about something. So, when all this started kind of blowing up, we were like, ‘Man, this is crazy how all this happened,’ off just being authentic, and not being something that’s fabricated, that you’re just trying to be somebody else. We’re like, ‘You know what, we’re going to run our own race. If people like it; they like it. If they don’t; you can scroll on. We want you to stay. We want you to be invested in us and stick with us and stuff like that, but at the end of the day, I think it’s all just about being authentic…”

The Michael Waddell Podcast is produced by Outdoor Sportsman Group and is available widely on Outdoor Channel YouTube, MyOutdoorTV, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and OutdoorChannel.com, to name a few.

When asked about his love of the outdoors, Zach explained: “I grew up outside; I didn’t really spend a whole lot of time inside. So, I got to grow a love for things outdoors. Back in the day, we weren’t allowed to come back inside. You didn’t spend a whole lot of time inside. Go outside and get dirty, cut grass, you got chores, you got things to do. So, that’s kind of the backstory [on] my love with just being outside, just being in the outdoors, whether that’s hunting and fishing, or riding four-wheelers or just taking a walk to the property line. I grew up doing that, a little Red Ryder BB gun, shooting pinecones or red birds, if my MaMa didn’t catch me… It was cool. Nowadays, it’s like, everybody is on their phone and on their tablets and stuff, and I just like getting outside, and that’s where everything started to come together… I was like, ‘Man, you know what, you’re meant to be outside.’ We need to embrace the outdoors and do all the things that the Lord provided, and I just enjoy all of that, and it drove me to be an outdoorsman and later turned me into an Old Grasshead.”

“I did enough to be dangerous,” said Zach, when questioned about his hunting and fishing background. “My uncle lived on a lake, so we’d go out there, put an old jon boat out there, so we’d go fishing a pretty good bit, for largemouth bass. It wasn’t stocked with F1s or anything like that, but it was pretty jam up. Living on land but growing up not really having a whole lot – we ended up joining a hunting club later in life – but where my love of deer hunting came from was the backyard. We’d see an old nanny doe standing out there eating on a kudzu vine and we’d think, ‘Man, it’s getting close. We’re about to get on one…’ I just fell in love with it, and we ended up getting on a hunting lease not far from here… The scale of the deer back in the day, before it was all this urban hunting and stuff, you had to get away from the city to see deer, or what we thought. But nowadays, people are killing 200-inch giants in doggone Buckhead. But, I mean, we got on that little tract of land, some 300 acres and a handful of members, and that’s where [I got to see] nature in its fullest… Hunting in the morning [fishing in the afternoon and hunting in the evening], that was always fun to me. That’s what really got me into it. I fell in love with watching the woods wake up; watching the woods go to sleep. It was always fun. But then you get into other stuff. I’m big into duck hunting. I’m probably a bigger duck hunter than I am a deer hunter; but I still have a love and appreciation for whitetail deer.”

“I’m appreciative of everything, and everything that comes along with this,” said Zach when questioned about SLD’s popularity and success. “I’m new to it all. I guess you could call it ‘fame,’ with the following that we’ve got. It’s a lot of people that know the name. I love being able to entertain someone, or having someone stop me at the gas station and be like, ‘Hey, Man, Dude, that truck looks good. Or, that grass looks good. Or I enjoyed what you said the other day about something you were feeling convicted of in your video… Man, I love what you said with that Bible verse. You didn’t have to say anything, but I felt like you were talking directly to me.’ …Well, I feel like that’s what the Good Lord does. He puts things in place where they belong. That’s where this kind of circles around. We’re put in these places, with these people, with situations, and it’s by design. I mean, I didn’t know it as a six-year-old, you know, playing in a mud puddle, that one day I’d have a couple thousand followers and they were going to be looking to me for grass tips, and wanting to figure out what boat I’m running this year, what wheel and tire setup [I’m running], but I am appreciative of it… It’s all blessings from the Good Man Above.”

“I really appreciate Zach Henry, the Southern Lawn Daddy, coming to chat with me,” said Waddell. “It was an honor to meet him and get to know him a little better, and I look forward to meeting up with him again and hopefully getting to meet his wife Morgan and their beautiful family. We have a lot in common, and I’m hoping we’ll be able to get together sometime soon to hunt some ducks and maybe a turkey or two. The Southern Lawn Daddy has certainly taken lawncare to new heights – and it’s truly about so much more than cutting grass – but I’m afraid I might have to cut some stripes now at Downton Dixie.

The Michael Waddell Podcast releases new episodes every other week.

Waddell’s story began in the backwoods of Booger Bottom, Georgia, where he grew up surrounded by nature, family, and a love for the outdoors. A self-proclaimed “rowdy redneck,” his passion for hunting and storytelling led him to win a Realtree turkey-calling contest, which launched his career in the outdoor industry. From guiding and filming hunts to creating hit shows like Realtree Road Trips and Bone Collector, Waddell has become a beloved figure in the outdoor world.

‘Duck Camp Dinners’ Earns James Beard Foundation Broadcast Award

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is OSG-Email-Signature_ALL-LOGOS_2024.png

Chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois Recognized for Efforts in Lifestyle Visual Media Category

DENVER (June 24, 2026) – MyOutdoorTV, the Outdoor Channel, and the entire Outdoor Sportsman Group (OSG) would like to congratulate Chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois and his hard-working team at Duck Camp Dinners for the recent recognition by America’s most prestigious culinary arts organization. Now in Season 4 of the popular series that premieres on Outdoor Channel before migrating to OSG’s leading global outdoor streaming platform, every season of Duck Camp Dinners now can be found on MyOutdoorTV (MOTV). Chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois has proven to be a master storyteller, and every episode he takes viewers into the heart of Louisiana’s wetlands, exploring the traditions and challenges of the region while bringing its “swamp floor pantry” and bold Cajun recipes to life.

When expressing his thoughts about receiving the James Beard Award for Lifestyle Broadcast Media, Chef Bourgeois had the following to say:

“Winning a James Beard Award has been a lifelong dream of mine, one I thought I had left behind when I stepped away from my full-time restaurant career in 2020 to pursue creating media that is deeply personal to me. Season 1 of Duck Camp Dinners was created in six days with very little budget and a handful of people who believed in the idea. As the creator, I had no idea what DCD would become as the concept grew through four seasons.
If I’m being honest, the idea of winning this award always made me uncomfortable.
The show was created and still strives to tell stories about people who weave the outdoors into their lives and explore God’s resources on this earth with curiosity, gratitude and purpose. Sometimes it isn’t pretty, but it is always honest. While I may have received this award, it truly belongs to everyone whose stories have been told and untold, who has supported this show, and who sees their way of life reflected in it.”

Be sure to check out Season 4 and all the great Duck Camp Dinners episodes streaming now on MyOutdoorTV. Chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois begins his fourth season in Louisiana’s Atchafalaya Delta at a new camp with plans for a weekend of work, running crab traps, setting jug lines and, of course, duck hunting – and it’s all capped off with a porch feast of blue crabs, duck spaghetti and trout. The second episode, “Texas Tour: Hall’s Bayou & El Campo,” introduces the series that caught the attention of the James Beard Foundation. The series continues with “Texas Tour: Rockport – Flounder & Redheads,” “Texas Tour: Refugio – Wild Duck Pho & Mixed Bag,” “Texas Tour: Lubbock – Cackling Geese and Tex Mex,” “Texas Tour: Lubbock – Sandhill Cranes and Country Music” and “Texas Tour: East Texas Wingshooting and Louisiana Redfish.”

About Chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois
A proud son of Louisiana, Chef Jean-Paul grew up among the bayous, ingraining in him a deep appreciation for Southern food and culture. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York, his career has been shaped by his passion for combining classic culinary techniques with the authenticity of his Cajun roots. Beyond cooking, Chef Jean-Paul is a natural storyteller, captivating audiences with his ability to connect food to place and heritage. His love for the outdoors and dedication to preserving Louisiana’s wetlands are evident in every episode of Duck Camp Dinners.

Andy Mill Featured on the ‘Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop’ Podcast

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is OSG-Email-Signature_ALL-LOGOS_2024.png

DENVER (June 23, 2026) – On the latest episode (#33) of the Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop podcast, Ross Purnell, Editor/Publisher of Fly Fisherman Magazine, sits down with one amazing fly fisherman – Andy Mill. A world-class skier who was one of America’s top downhill racers in the 1970s and early ‘80s, the U.S. Champion in ’76, who skied four times in the World Championships (’74, ’76, ’78 and ’80), and twice represented the United States in the Olympics, finishing sixth in Innsbruck in ’76 despite a severe training injury to his foot, and finishing 16th overall in 1980 at Lake Placid, New York. Mill was a regular on the World Cup Circuit until a career-ending skiing accident in Switzerland in ’81, and afterwards he went on to a very successful, 20-year TV and broadcast career covering World Cup skiing and the Winter Olympics for CBS and other networks. Over his career as a skier, Mill certainly proved that he had the heart of a champion; however, another passion burned deep in his heart, stemming from his childhood in Aspen, Colorado – fly fishing.

In 1960, the Mill Family moved to Aspen, where as a youth Andy Mill excelled at a variety of sports – skiing, of course – but also at football and baseball. A chance meeting with fly fishing pioneer Ernie Schwiebert while Mill was riding his bike to baseball practice along the Roaring Fork River would have as big an impact on his future as the slopes of the Aspen Snowmass.

“One day riding my bicycle to baseball practice I saw this fly line going back and forth [making a motion with his finger] and I thought, ‘Wow, look how cool that is,’ so I rode my bike over and it was Ernie Schwiebert. He was in Aspen on behalf of the Country Store, which was a fly tying, fly fishing little store, and he was giving fly casting demonstrations, and I went over there and after the session he taught me how to cast. Ten years later he was back in town, and we found each other, and now he’s sleeping on my couch. I was living in Basalt. Now I’m 17 or 18 years old, and he’s sleeping on my couch, and we were fishing the Fryingpan [River]. I had my vice, and he was tying flies on my Vega. I had a little Vega, and Ernie Schwiebert was tying flies and wading them out to me in the middle of the river. And then, a number of years later, I was fishing in Alaska with Ernie. So, Ernie was the great Ernie Schwiebert, and we became pretty tight and traveled together a little bit. And then, Chuck Fothergill taught me how to tie flies when I was 11-12 years old with the Wright brothers – Jonathan, Flip, and Chapin Wright – and Jonathan, as you know, was climbing with Chouinard and was killed in an avalanche. Aspen was really fly-fishing ground zero there for quite a few years, because Chuck Fothergill had a store and a lot of people started fly fishing. But when I started, there wasn’t anybody on the river, and I loved it!”

“So, when Covid hit,” Mill continued, “I had a chance to show my son Nicky what I grew up with because there was not one airplane at the airport. There was nobody driving. The world was shut down. And I had a chance to show Nicky what I grew up with on the Roaring Fork, when we went down and could go anywhere we wanted and never saw another person. And then we got into the Keys before – it was shut down for the whole month of May – we got into the Keys and we were tarpon fishing, and we never saw another boat from Bow Channel to Key West, 17 miles, maybe 21 miles, never saw another boat for like two weeks, and every tarpon you saw was high and happy and wanted to bite your fly… The best day we had, we hooked 18 tarpon and caught 12, on the oceanside.”

“My relationship with fishing has kind of changed,” confided Mill, “because of what I’ve seen. You know, I’m an older guy now. I still love to trout fish, but on my terms, and the fact that I really don’t care about catching a little fish anymore. I’d rather walk the river and look for a big fish that might be feeding under the surface and try to target him. Or, during a caddis fly hatch, get a bite but just don’t set the hook, and you just try to get a few bites, smoke a cigar and go home. But fly fishing was as important to me as a young kid as skiing was.”

Listen to the Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop podcast, in partnership with Patagonia, G. Loomis, Mayfly Outdoors, TroutRoutes and Cigars International, on Apple Podcast, YouTube, Spotify, and at FlyFisherman.com.

After Mill’s catastrophic ski injury, he went into the broadcast booth and held numerous other jobs related to his skiing career, but he wasn’t happy because he no longer was chasing a goal. “My goal in life was never to be a TV show host or to be the director of skiing. My whole life was like trying to win baseball games or go catch a fish or try to win ski races, and now my whole life was flatlined. And then the Outdoor Life Network called and asked me to do some specials. So, I hosted some of these specials for them and they enjoyed my work, and then they said, ‘Hey, how about hosting and producing a fishing show.’ And I said, ‘I have no time at all.’ But I started to think a little more closely about it and my life at the time, and I was making really good money. And I called them back and I said, ‘I’ll tell you what I’ll do. You match what I make as a skier, all my contracts, all my clothing sponsors, skis, boots, bindings, what I was making from the ski company and the TV stuff. You match that, and give me a five-year contract, and I will change careers. I will leave skiing.’ And they did…and we traveled the world for seven years producing great shows, and then I got involved in fishing tournaments in the Keys, but that basically changed my life in such a giant way because now I was having fun again, I was chasing stuff. I was fishing with the best anglers in the world catching these giant fish.”

During the 1990s, Mill went on to host and produce over 90 episodes of Sportsman’s Journal with Andy Mill for the Outdoor Life Network (later Versus Network) and he fly fished around the world. Additionally, he has won a dozen saltwater fly-fishing tournaments, including 11 major tarpon tournaments (the most ever by a single fisherman), and he also won tournament titles for bonefish and permit, making him the only angler to win a tarpon/bonefish/permit tournament on fly. Mill’s competitive dominance duly earned him membership in both the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust Hall of Fame (Class of ’22) and the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame (Class of ’23).

When asked about the end of his skiing career and making the move to fishing, Mill simply said, “Life moves on. Life is about surviving, right. Life is about recovery. It doesn’t always go well. We learn more from our mistakes and our failures than we do when we win.”

“I’m so grateful for the time Andy Mill was able to spend with me,” said Purnell. “I have been a fan throughout his career, and I have to say that I’m amazed at his skiing career, and I’m probably more amazed at his fishing career, and his tournament accomplishments on the saltwater flats that may never be matched. His book, “A Passion for Tarpon,” is an authoritative must-read, and you can bet that I’ll continue to tune into the Mill House Podcast that he hosts with his son Nicky.”

Jesse Wiggins Talks About Growing Up a Fish Nerd, Paying His Dues, and God Things on ‘The Michael Waddell Podcast’

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is OSG-Email-Signature_ALL-LOGOS_2024.png

Jesse Wiggins and Waddell Discuss Fishing Instincts and Forward-Facing Sonar

DENVER (June 17, 2026) – Join Host Michael Waddell as he sits down with popular Major League Fishing (MLF) pro bass angler Jesse Wiggins, who currently ranks in the Top 20 on MLF’s Bass Pro Tour (BPT). Wiggins has fished 90+ MLF tournaments, stood on top of the podium 5 times, finished in the Top 10 nearly a third of the time and has more than $1.2 million in career winnings. Wiggins first qualified for the Elite Series of the Bass Pro Shops B.A.S.S. Circuit in 2016 and fished the complete series the next season. In an 18-month period (2016-2017), he won three Opens, and his first national tour-level win was at the MLF’s BPT Stage 4 on the Lake of the Ozarks in 2022, and he’s our special guest on The Michael Waddell Podcast, presented by Spandau Arms and in partnership with Folds of Honor, Cigars International and Poncho Outdoors. Born and raised in northcentral Alabama on the edge of the Bankhead National Forest and the massive Smith Lake fishery, formed when the Alabama Power Company dammed the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River, Wiggins and his two brothers were taught to fish by their father on those local waters, and Wiggins claims to love deer and turkey hunting almost as much as he loves bass fishing.

In this podcast, Jesse Wiggins and Waddell cover a wide variety of topics but focus, naturally, on Wiggins’ competitive bass-fishing career, which started for his brother Jordan and him when they were very young because their father loved to bass fish, even fished competitively in some local tournaments, and he got the boys involved when they were small children. Wiggins can’t remember when he caught his first fish, but he fished in his first tournament when he was just five years old.

“Hunting and fishing was our life,” began Wiggins. “Me and my brother started fishing tournaments when we got into 9th, 10th, 11th Grade, and it was like, we could either go hang out all night or we could go back and tie jigs or build lures, or get a boat working somehow so we could go fishing Saturday morning. …I remember when we were younger we’d fish Friday night, go home and sleep a couple of hours, and then get up and fish the Saturday morning tournament, and then fish the Tuesday night tournament. It just kept us out of so much trouble because we had some freedom and could have done whatever, but we always chose to just go fishing – or hunting – either one. I look back and think, we’re so lucky to make it out just loving fishing. …A lot of people listening grew up the same way. That’s what I try to promote – hunting and fishing. It keeps people out of trouble, no doubt in my mind. It just grew to be a passion, and we [Wiggins and his brother] took it to a way bigger level than I ever thought was possible!”

Now that Wiggins has found consistent success at the highest level of professional bass fishing, people often question whether he ever gets tired of fishing. “The fishing part is fun,” said Wiggins, “that ain’t work! Being gone [from home] is the worst part – the truck-driving part of it. That’s my least favorite part of it. People don’t realize that we might be gone six or seven days fishing, but we’re also gone three more days traveling a lot of times. It’s that kind of thing that people don’t realize. But, it’s just worth it. I always say, like, speaking of New York and smallmouth…you drive to New York, and it’s 18 hours from home to get there, and all you can think about is that first four- or five-pound smallmouth you hook into, and as soon as you get there and hook it, you’re like, ‘Okay, it was worth it! It was worth it!’ It would be just like going hunting somewhere and, as soon as you get to sling that first arrow, you think, ‘Okay, it was worth it! It was worth all that waiting.’ It’s the same feeling. But I’m lucky to get to do it, for sure. I’m extremely blessed, lucky and all that good stuff.”

The Michael Waddell Podcast is produced by Outdoor Sportsman Group and is available widely on Outdoor Channel YouTube, MyOutdoorTV, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and OutdoorChannel.com, to name a few.

“It was a lot of sacrifice,” said Wiggins, when asked about what it took to get started. “Don’t get me wrong, I’d sacrifice [to do it again] tomorrow, for sure. But like I said before, all the the high school night life, all that was off the table. You sacrificed that to be fishing. People would always get mad at us for fishing and winning [maybe mad isn’t the right word], and they’d ask how we were winning – We fished! That’s what we did. I make the joke that our summer job the year we got out of high school – well, my brother was one year younger – but the year he got out of high school, I’d already been out, but our summer job was fishing all those night tournaments. ‘As long as we win, we can make way more money winning these than we can working.’” Wiggins thought. “This is way more fun…”

“My Grandpa built houses,” continued Wiggins, “and that’s what we did in the summer. We helped him build, and I hated every second of it. I’m not scared to admit it. I’ll tell him; I hated it. It was decent money, and he needed help. Shout out to my Grandpa – he built every house that my family lives in! …But that’s what I grew up doing, and I knew I hated that, so I was like, if we could fish… and then we won some money those early years, and I’m like, ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever seen – getting paid money to go fishing.’ …I knew pro angling was a thing, I was a fan, but I didn’t think it was possible [to make a living at it]. I didn’t know anybody who did it, and I didn’t have a clue how to get there. We just went fishing in tournaments and wanted to win.”

“When I first realized that if we can catch fish, we can make a living doing this, I just kept on,” continued Wiggins. “I kept making my way up through the smaller ranks. I just fished around the house. I figured, as long as I can make money fishing, that’s the money I’m going to spend fishing. So, I never went into any kind of debt doing it…I just nickel and dimed my way up to where I could get new stuff – I didn’t even have a boat that had a fishfinder on it until 2012, and I started fishing professionally in 2016, so I felt like I was so behind…but it just seemed like I’d keep catching fish in those tournaments and just keep doing good.”

“Half the time the motor wouldn’t even crank on our boat [an old Johnson 200],” confided Wiggins, “and at night before the tournament, we’d have to figure out a way to get the boat working, floating, batteries charging, getting them off other vehicles, charging them. We didn’t have any money. We were just doing what we could. We knew that if we could get the boat in the water and it would float, we’d have a chance. …That’s what me and my brother grew up doing, and he fishes the circuit lower than mine right now, and he’s trying to qualify for our circuit. He’s better than I am, in my opinion. He can catch ‘em!” Wiggins added with a smile.

When asked what advice he has for young people who dream about fishing professionally, Wiggins had the following to say: “For sure, now, the way it’s set up with high school fishing and college fishing, it would be hard not to do some of that…especially if colleges will cover travel and stuff to the tournaments. That’s a sure-fire way to get started. Start in high school, and then go to college, and you can fish and get your degree. And once you get out there, you may decide that this isn’t for you, being out on the road and doing it; so, you don’t want to just forget college. …If you grew up like I did – not a bunch of money – I’d strongly suggest doing the college fishing route. Because you’re going to get so much experience, and it’s going to be on the college. A lot of the colleges will pay for housing and give you gas money. A lot of it is paid for, so that’s certainly a good route to take because you’re going to network, you’ll get with people… But, if you’re fortunate enough to have a dad or parents or grandparents who will pay for you to be out there, Man, then you just have to be on the water. You have to get in those tournament settings, and get your mindset in the tournament mindset, where it’s competition… Go to lakes you haven’t been to, learn them, get in tournaments on those lakes, and just learn them. That’s if you have the means, the funds. If Daddy can support you to get out there, like I said, I’m totally jealous, I wish I could have done that because I feel like I had the work ethic but just didn’t have the funds. But do that. Get out there. Fish tournaments. Get out there and learn!”

“If you start catching them regionally around your house,” Wiggins continued, “then work your way up. Even if you’re having your bill footed for you. Work your way up. You’ll have the base of knowledge that you can always fall back on. Even now, fishing professionally, I [have got to try] different stuff, whatever bait is supposed to be hot for that lake, but if it doesn’t work out, I’m still going back to my Shaky Head and my Chatterbait, the stuff that I’m going to use no matter; it’s always tied on. So, you get your confidence – you build your confidence when you’re younger and learning how to do it, and then you just work your way up. There are avenues now, both leagues – Bassmasters and Major League Fishing – have avenues to start from when you’re young and you can work your way up like I did.”

“I’m so grateful that Jesse Wiggins found the time to visit with me,” said Waddell, “and go fishing with me, too! I’m so proud of what he has accomplished. He comes from a blue-collar background, and he’s a real scrapper who is living his American dream catching fish. I’m excited to see where his career goes from here, and knowing him and his work ethic, I won’t be surprised to see him reach all his goals, whether it’s tournament wins, ‘Angler of the Year’ recognition, or ‘Father of the Year.’”
