Paige Pearce Shares Insights on ‘Mental Training for Bowhunters’ on The Bowhunter Podcast

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is OSG-Email-Signature_ALL-LOGOS_2024.png

DENVER (May 13, 2026) – The Bowhunter Podcast, in partnership with Poncho Outdoors, recently sat down for an info-packed conversation with Paige Pearce, Bowtech pro shooter, world champion archer and passionate bowhunter. Podcast Host Christian Berg, Associate Publisher/Editor in Chief of Bowhunter Magazine, visited with Pearce to follow up on her recent feature article, “Sharpen Your Edge!” in the magazine’s May/June issue, on sale now. The article focuses on Pearce’s mental training program and how it has contributed to her archery – and bowhunting – success. Before the recording of this podcast, she had just returned from a very closely contested 2026 Archery World Cup Stage 1 event in Puebla, Mexico, and before posting of this podcast she had made history once again on her home turf, breaking a personal best and, for the 11th time, winning the Female Pro Division of the NFAA’s Marked 3D National Championship held May 1-3 at the Western Classic Trail Shoot in Redding, California.

Pearce certainly is among the most accomplished female compound shooters of all time. She set her first state record at age 10, made the U.S. Archery Team at 13 and turned pro at 15. She has won 12 world titles and countless more tournaments across the field archery, 3D and World Archery formats. Pearce is one of the few archers who makes her entire living shooting her compound bow, and she participates in many different disciplines (both indoor and outdoor), so between various tournaments, seminars and other events, there’s not much room for bowhunting; however, as hard as she works and as much as she loves target archery, she claims to love bowhunting even more.

A California native, Paige Pearce was introduced to DIY, public-land hunting by her parents, and she thrives on the challenge of hunting with the bow and arrow because there are so many unknowns that must be overcome. “I think that’s what makes bowhunting so exciting,” she began. “I love the adrenaline. I’m a competitor by nature. I definitely thrive off of that competition type feeling, but nothing compares to the adrenaline of bowhunting. …There’s so many different factors and stuff you can’t control, and I think that’s what makes it feel so electric.”

When asked about what separates the good archers from the great, and what helped her consistently step onto the podium, she shared the following:

“At the top level, just like any other sport, everyone can shoot a bow. It’s who can do it when it matters most, in the heat of the moment, under pressure, and those are typically the people who will come out on top. Now, there’s always rarities,” Pearce continued, “but in archery, it’s not just a one-hit wonder; it’s about consistency and longevity and so, if you want to be consistently on the podium or at the top of the podium, you must have a mental game. You have to be able to handle that pressure and do it weekend after weekend, format after format. I recognized that early on,” Pearce added. “I was competitive my whole life. I played sports, I did other things, I even played the fiddle competitively. If there was a competition, I wanted to be in it. I very much learned, even through other sports, that there were people who would be so great in practice and then I’d just watch them fail and fail and fail, time and again, when it really mattered the most, when it was time to step up to the plate. So, I dove into the mental training at a very young age. I think I was 10-years-old when I first started that. I was actually at the Vegas Shoot and there was a raffle for one of Lanny Bassham’s books called With Winning In Mind. …I read that book out loud in the car on the way home, and that’s where my journey started.”

With more than two decades of experience in building up her own mental game, Pearce is now sharing what she has learned. She has developed her Insight Mental Programming educational series to help archers improve their own performance. The program includes modules to address specific challenges, such as overcoming target panic, building confidence, beating buck fever and more.

“One of the most important things,” Pearce said, “is you want to have practiced enough and shot enough arrows that every element of your actual shot itself is subconscious. No one is out there swinging a baseball bat thinking about how they’re going to lift their leg and do all this stuff – they just swing; it’s natural to them. If a police officer has to pull a gun on someone, I want an officer who has done that so many times and practiced that routine so that the gun is out of the holster and everything is good. I don’t want some person who has never done it and their gun gets stuck in the holster. The more you do something, the more smooth and repetitive that becomes, because that act is transitioning from your conscious mind running it to the subconsious mind is now running that, which is really the stronger, more fluid part of our mind. So, everything we do in archery, ideally, we will have built into the subconsious so in those moments when there isn’t time to think…the subconscious just kicks in and does it’s job. So, ideally, if bowhunters have practiced enough, at least their shot elements are built into the subconsious. That’s the first step…”

When asked about handling buck fever, Pearce admitted that she still gets nervous. “I still feel the adrenaline hunting; I always will. But, before I’d done all this mental programming, I used to feel it before the shot. I’d see the animal and the adrenaline would spike, and I’d hook my [release] up and I’d see my hand quivering, waiting to draw the bow back; but now I’ve transition to where I can hold that off, I can contain that, I can stay calm, I can stay mentally focused, I can make a good shot and, usually, it’s when my bow fires that then the adrenaline rush hits.”

“I wish that this was something that more people took seriously, and that more people did,” confided Pearce, “because they’d have so much more success. I can honestly attest over my years of bowhunting that when I started the mental training, it wasn’t because of bowhunting, I started the mental side on target, focused primarily on target, but then when I went bowhunting I saw that start to carry over and I was like, ‘Okay, I care so much about bowhunting, you put in so much time, money, effort, all the things, going out of state, getting tags, getting ready for these hunts, that I should also be putting that much mental effort into the hunting success, just like I do the tournament side.’”

“One of the things I love about the archery community,” said Host Christian Berg, “is the willingness of pro archers to share what works with fellow archers, and that extends to bowhunters like myself. Paige Pearce is an incredibly hard-working and successful archer, literally competing at the highest levels, but she loves bowhunting too, and it was wonderful to spend time with her and to learn how having a mental game can help you in the moment of truth on big game.” To learn more about developing your own mental game for archery and bowhunting, visit Paige Pearce’s Insight Mental Programming.

The episode is now available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and Podbean. Watch the full episode here. Additionally, pick up the latest issue of Bowhunter Magazine on newsstands or subscribe.

McMillan juggles family life and his high-profile clients in this hilariously honest look into the world of one of the country’s most beloved outfitting families. “The only full-time job I have is being me,” confides McMillan in the first episode of this season. “I’m part-time cattleman, part-time farmer, part-time veterinarian, part-time hunter, part-time roper, but the me part is a dad and a husband. So that never changes. There’s a lot of things thrown at me during the day that, I don’t know, I wish I would have gone to a little more schooling instead of the School of Hard Knocks.” Episodes for this season include: “Sand Hill Plums,” “Tom Goes Elk Shopping,” “Back to School and Rodeo Ready,” “Livestock and Pie Crust,” “Tending the Elk Herd,” “Colorado Roping,” “McMillan Family Goes Rodeo,””Gatlin Becomes a Patient Hunter,” “Clients in Camp for a Monster Buck,” “Big Buck Right There,” and there’s so much more. “My work is this place,” says McMillan, “and all the good that goes along with it, so it’s kept me going this long.”

Viewers won’t want to miss a single moment as these aspiring rodeo stars give all they’ve got to pursue their dreams of fame and fortune. From competing in the Texas circuit to competing in the bright lights of Las Vegas, these kids experience serious injuries, extreme pressure and for some, a life-changing windfall. “It takes a lot to be a rodeo kid,” admits one Rodeo Mom. “You have to have a lot of discipline. You have to be self-driven. Because the way you practice is the way you’re going to perform. Loomis, The Fly Shop and Scientific Anglers, and airing on Outdoor Channel May 9 at 11:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. EST. A Ben Annibali film, The Shoals follows the travels of Fly Fisherman Magazine Editor/Publisher Ross Purnell as he journeys to remote St. Brandon Atoll in the Indian Ocean in search of the Giant Trevally (GT). The atoll makes for an epic setting for Purnell’s captivating pursuit of the his lifelong dream to catch the Indo-Pacific’s “king of the reef,” and the cinematographic result is stunningly beautiful and absolutely unforgettable.

Outdoor Channel also will air Fly Fisherman’s “The Shoals” on May 10 at 6:00 p.m. ET, on May 11 at 10 p.m. ET and on May 16 at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Documenting this fishing expedition was no small feat as the 30-mile long, 8-mile wide angling paradise lies 270 nautical miles from the governing island nation of Mauritius, which is 1,100 nautical miles from Madagascar in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa. The only way to get there is by boat, and it’s a notoriously rough, 30-hour voyage. Through an interesting historical turn of events, the Raphael Fishing Company, Ltd., privately holds over a dozen islands in the archipelago, and along with the St. Brandon Conservation Trust, keeps watch over one of the world’s most remote and amazing flats fishing spots for bonefish, permit and trevally. Also, it should be noted that sailors who had wrecked on “St. Brandon Rocks” in 1662 provided the last record of the flightless dodo bird, which famously was overharvested and went extinct only 80 years after discovery.

“It seems ironic that the last dodos seen alive were part of a dramatic survival story around the isolated and dangerous St. Brandon Atoll,” said Fly Fisherman Editor/Publisher Ross Purnell. “Now, St. Brandon is itself a kind of living, breathing dodo bird. It’s the last of its kind, one of the last great unimpacted, undeveloped and unpopulated atolls in any ocean. The dodos are gone. But today the pristine reef/island/shoal habitat serves as a model for scientists researching what a healthy hawksbill turtle population should look like, how healthy corals thrive and grow, and how a thriving shark population is part of a healthy marine environment. To scientists, St. Brandon Atoll is a blueprint for marine ecosystem recovery.”

While St. Brandon Atoll is a “reference ecosystem” where there has been very little human impact and is infinitely intriguing to marine scientists, for fly fishers able to endure the trip, overcome the tides and winds and manage the hundreds of square miles of sandy lagoons and wadable backreef flats, this is the fishing destination of a lifetime.

Now, thanks to the enterprising team at Fly Fisherman, The Shoals provides viewers with a firsthand look at one of the most incredible ecosystems on the planet, and to see it is to want to preserve it forever. Be sure to tune in May 9 at 11:00 a.m. ET and again at 6:00 p.m. ET on Outdoor Channel.

An accompanying feature article, “The Shoals,” appears in Fly Fisherman’s June-July 2026 issue, on sale May 5.

Garrett Marchbanks, SuperMotocross Racer, Rider of the #36 Monster Energy Kawasaki KX450SR, Talks Hunting, Family and Finding His Flow on ‘The Michael Waddell Podcast’

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is OSG-Email-Signature_ALL-LOGOS_2024.png

Garrett Marchbanks and Waddell Discuss Motocross and Hunting Dreams

DENVER (May 6, 2026) – Garrett Marchbanks started riding motorcycles when he was just 5 years old, he began to compete locally as a 6-year-old, and by 8 he was traveling to race in AMA Amateur Nationals. As a 9-year-old, he won his first championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, and between 2010 and 2017 he won a total of eight championships there as a member of Kawasaki’s dominant Team Green, competing in everything from 65cc class to 250 B division. He turned Pro in 2018, and today, at 24 years of age, he’s one of the hottest riders in the SuperMotocross Championship, and a key member of Team Kawasaki, having finished in the top three in the 2025 standings for Pro Motocross in the 250 class. Now, he’s back as a lead rider for Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki and has his sights set on Top 5’s and podium finishes riding 450 class, and he’s our special guest on The Michael Waddell Podcast, presented by Spandau Arms and in partnership with Folds of Honor, Cigars International and Poncho Outdoors. In this easy going podcast, Garrett Marchbanks and Waddell cover a wide variety of topics, including Marchbanks’ career, his motorcycles, riding and racing, the training and discipline necessary to meet the physical and psychological demands of competing at the highest level, the specifics of racing Motocross and Supercross, shooting bows and arrows and, of course, the thrills of racing and the thrills of hunting.

Garrett Marchbanks calls Coalville, Utah home, and he was introduced to hunting by his father about the same time he started riding motorcycles. “I definitely grew up hunting quite a bit. I’d say from the ages 7-15 I hunted quite a bit with Dad,” said Marchbanks, “but then once racing took off when I was 15, I haven’t done it as much. But whenever I get the chance, I try to do it as much as I can.”

While he hasn’t had the opportunity to hunt and fish as much as he’d like in recent years, Marchbanks has spent a lot of time in the great outdoors – but on his dirt bike. Today he splits time between racing outside on dirt Motocross tracks and inside at stadium Supercross tracks. Mastering both very different disciplines takes time. “At first it was pretty difficult for me,” explained Marchbanks. “For me, it always seemed like when we do testing, going from Supercross to go run outdoors for a week, once I had to go back to Supercross it would take me a week to get comfortable. Now, when I kinda just swap, I can do two days outdoors, one day on Supercross, and go race the next day. What makes it more difficult is just the bike setup – a completely different chassis setup, suspension, clamps and things like that.”

“It took me a full year to really get going on Supercross when I first went pro,” Marchbank continued. “After that, it came more natural to me. The light bikes are a lot easier to ride Supercross on just because everything is almost wide open. You hit a lot of triples, like when you’re tripling into a turn or hitting a quad you’re just wide open, on the 250. The 450, on the other hand, it’s just so much more power. So you’ve got to be super precise. That’s something I’ve really worked on this year, being the first time running Supercross on a 450. So, I’d say for me, it’s not really the triples, for me it’s quading stuff that’s a little harder just because the other bike was always wide open. With the 450 when you do that, you OJ something and almost go five, and you’re like, ‘Uh, that wasn’t it!’”

The Michael Waddell Podcast is produced by Outdoor Sportsman Group and is available widely on Outdoor Channel YouTube, MyOutdoorTV, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and OutdoorChannel.com, to name a few.

In Motocross, there’s a lot of talk about being “in the flow,” when muscle memory and instinct take over and a rider and bike work as one. “It’s a lot of timing, a lot of practice and being in the zone,” explained Marchbanks. “For me, a good example is like Seattle this year: there was a jump I wasn’t doing all day in qualifying or the heat race, and it was just a triple onto a table, and it was super steep, and all of a sudden in the main event, two laps in, I had that flow and that feel of the bike, and I was like, ‘Oh, all right, I feel what I need to do on it,’ and I just started to doing it. …Sometimes, I’ve had that in practice, there’s a big jump I know I should be doing, I won’t do it, and then all of a sudden I’ll start to put laps together and I’ll bust it out. I’ll just do it. So, it’s just how comfortable you are with the chassis, the bike, how you’re feeling… For me, once I put a lot of time on something and get really comfortable, that’s when I start to do all the big stuff.”

Few, if any, sports are as physically demanding as Motocross, and every race is a test of physical and mental toughness. “…You want to stay consistent,” explained Marchbanks. “Stay at a steady pace. You’re not gonna want to go all-out for 20 minutes because then you’re going to blow yourself up, unless you’re just a special breed of a guy who can do that. For me, when you’re racing these 20-minute moto’s on a bike like this that can ride you sometimes, you just gotta learn to be super precise with it, smooth and find a flow. If you can find a flow on these things, it won’t take the energy out of you.”

Watch one highly competitive Motocross race, and you’ll see riders putting their bodies and their lives at risk. “I’ve had my fair share of hitting the ground this year,” said Marchbanks, “and it still hurts. No matter how good a shape you’re in… You could be in great fitness shape and then you go hop on the bike and sometimes it doesn’t even translate. I mean, you gotta be in bike shape also. You’ve got to be in good shape in the gym, you’ve got to be in good shape on the bike, you’ve got to make sure you’re doing all the motos and things like that. It’s a lot of work to put into it. …I’m finally starting to learn what I need to do to be successful and be in great shape. It took me five years to figure it out. So, it’s a work load.”

While Garrett Marchbanks is completely focused on winning motorcycle races right now, he still thinks about the future when he hopes to hunt and fish more. “I’ve yet to kill an elk,” he confided. “I really got into it when I was about 17…I got real close with it. We’d get into them. But when you’re hunting public land out there [Utah], it’s like showing up to your local dirt track on a Saturday – there are hundreds of people out there. It gets pretty tough elk hunting on public. So, for me, my goal is to, when I do have the time, to finally go get myself an elk.”

“I’ve already killed some pretty good-sized mule deer,” Marchbanks continued. “I get more nerve-racking shooting a deer with my bow than I do racing my dirt bike. …It’s wild, because I’ll be calm on the gate and looking at my heart rate on my handlebars, and it will say 130-140, just sitting there, just the adrenaline going; but I’m calm, like I’m not really shaking, I know what I’m going to do – execute. But when it comes to shooting a deer, I’ve watched them come up 30-40 yards and looked at my heart rate and it’s 80-100. I’m like, ‘All right, my heart rate is low,’ and I’m sitting there shaking and trying to take deep breaths, and I’m like, ‘Why am I freaking out right now?’”

When asked about competing against idols, friends and mentors, Marchbanks explained, “For me, it would make me super happy to go out there and beat those guys that I grew up watching and, for me, to just put good races together. This year has been a little rough for me, but my goal is to just be up there battling with those guys. I’d love to be battling with guys like Kenny [Roczen] and Eli [Tomac], guys I haven’t quite battled with yet, but I want to be up there and put some good races together,” concluded Marchbanks. We have a strong feeling that Garrett Marchbanks will do just that.

“I was so pumped to visit with Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Garrett Marchbanks,” said Waddell. “I have been a fan of Motocross since I was a teenager and even dreamed that someday I’d be screaming around the dirt track myself. Cam Hanes introduced me to Garrett last July when he landed his first Pro Motocross Podium at Washougal National, and I was thrilled to learn he’s a hardcore hunter too. I have a feeling that someday we’re going to be sitting around a campfire in hunting camp together, but he has some more races to win – and I have to figure out how to trade him an elk hunt for an MX bike.”

The Michael Waddell Podcast releases new episodes every other week.

Waddell’s story began in the backwoods of Booger Bottom, Georgia, where he grew up surrounded by nature, family, and a love for the outdoors. A self-proclaimed “rowdy redneck,” his passion for hunting and storytelling led him to win a Realtree turkey-calling contest, which launched his career in the outdoor industry. From guiding and filming hunts to creating hit shows like Realtree Road Trips and Bone Collector, Waddell has become a beloved figure in the outdoor world.

Outdoor Sportsman Group Names Ryan Barnes Editor in Chief of WILDFOWL

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is OSG-Email-Signature_ALL-LOGOS_2024.png

WILDFOWL Magazine Now Has Eight-time Goose Calling Champion at the Helm.

DENVER (May 5, 2026) – Outdoor Sportsman Group is proud to announce the promotion of Ryan Barnes, eight-time goose calling champion and passionate waterfowler and journalist, to the position of Editor in Chief for its WILDFOWL brand.

Barnes brings with him years of experience in the field, backed by a career in journalism. He began developing his goose-calling skills at the age of 10, and by 16 he was competing in pro-level contests against some of the best callers in the world. His talent landed him on multiple pro-staffs and allowed him to travel across North America to hunt before he even had his driver’s license.

When not in a blind, Barnes helped build the popular digital media company, Split Reed, which focuses on all things waterfowl hunting. Between his journalistic pursuits and hunting and guiding in the fall, Barnes cultivated an expertise and deep understanding of what content waterfowl hunters want and need.

“I knew we had scored a great candidate in Ryan two years ago when we hired him as Associate Editor,” said Kali Parmley, Associate Publisher of WILDFOWL. “He has proven to be a dedicated, passionate and hardworking employee who walks the walk and talks the talk—literally—and I’m proud to have him as our new Editor in Chief. He will take this magazine to new heights.”

Barnes holds multiple Top 10 finishes in some of the biggest goose-calling contests in the nation, including Montana’s Flying V Western Waterfowl Contest, the Washington Waterfowl Calling Championships, Oregon Waterfowl Festival, Dive Bomb Squadfest and the World Championship. He took First Place at the following events:

  • 2x Cabela’s Open Goose Calling Champion
  • 2x Utah State Goose Calling Champion
  • 1x SFW Novice Goose Calling Champion
  • 2x Snake River Open Goose Calling Champion
  • 1x International Sportsman Junior Goose Calling Champion

Barnes grew up as an avid waterfowler. He took his first mallard at age 12, and since that moment, the pursuit of waterfowl has been his passion. Barnes was known to draw sketches of ducks and geese in grade school, instead of paying attention to his studies. Wanting to learn everything he could about the sport, his parents purchased him his first magazine subscription to none other than WILDFOWL Magazine.

“I could always be found with a copy of WILDFOWL in my backpack or locker all through school,” says Barnes. “WILDFOWL has played an enormous role in my love for the sport of duck and goose hunting, and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to be Editor in Chief of the brand. It’s my goal to make sure we continue to bring the audience of WILDFOWL the best waterfowl hunting stories, highlight the best gear on the market and showcase the men and women who make this sport so great. It’s an honor to be at the helm of such an iconic publication, and I’m excited to see the heights to which we can take this great magazine.”
