Digital Video Series Records Epic Adventures in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Quetico Provincial Park

DENVER (September 16, 2026) – Join in the adventure of a lifetime, traversing and fishing North America’s most treasured canoe waters with “Backcountry Angler,” Presented by Bass Pro Shops, in partnership with Lew’s, Alps Mountaineering, Northstar Canoes, Hobie, Suspenz, Sven-Saw, Anderson Canoe Outfitters, Bending Branches, Defend, Burlebo, Wiley X and StrikeKing, and in cooperation with Outdoor Sportsman Group’s legacy fishing brand, In-Fisherman. Available now to watch exclusively on In-Fisherman.com,

In-Fisherman YouTube, MyOutdoorTV (MOTV) and Game & Fish TV, this 6-part series hosted by Outdoor Sportsman Group’s Mike Carney, Pat Hogan, and Derek Mleynek gives viewers a first-hand look at everything it takes to launch a family fishing expedition in the pristine, interconnected lake country of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) inside the Superior National Forest on the U.S. side and Canada’s Quetico Provincial Park. Inspired by a shared desire to explore all the BWCA has to offer and to share those experiences with friends and family – in this case, Pat with his son, Porter, and Derek with his two oldest sons, Cooper and Miles – it’s Outdoor Sportsman Group President & CEO Mike Carney’s pleasure to lead the team on this one-of-a-kind backcountry canoe trip.

Making best use of the Anderson Canoe Outfitters shuttle service to their launch point, the team members bid goodbye to civilization and slide their Northstar Canoes gently into the cool, black waters, paddling toward a remote island basecamp that had been reconnoitered first by a 10-year-old Pat Hogan and his father some three decades earlier. What follows is an epic adventure filled with heartwarming memories to last a lifetime, and the resulting 6-part video series promises everything you need to know about venturing into the Boundary Waters, from early considerations, trip planning, managing canoes and gear, portaging, setting up a basecamp and, of course, all the rods, reels, lines, lures and more that lead to safe and successful days on the water with loads of healthy walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass brought to net and more than a few brought to the frypan.

“There’s no place like the Boundary Waters,” said Carney, “and it was really special to make the trip with Pat and Derek and their sons. This wilderness presents its unique set of challenges, but there’s no shortage of fish. I cannot think of a better place to put fishing tackle and techniques to the test.”

“Retracing my steps with Porter was like looking at my 10-year-old self,” said Hogan. “What a wonderful opportunity to share that experience with my son but also to see him earn it for himself along the way, whether with a canoe paddle or fishing rod in hand.”

“I like to know there’s a place like this where we can escape and share experiences like no other with the people we love,” said Mleynek. “We need to protect treasures like this.”

Tim Cremin, Head of Programming at Outdoor Sportsman Group (OSG), expressed his enthusiasm for Backcountry Angler, Presented by Bass Pro Shops: “Our team works tirelessly under all conditions to bring viewers the very best of the outdoors, but make no mistake, it was no small feat to document this wilderness canoe trip, and I’m especially proud of our team and appreciative of our outstanding partners. The result will inspire many future trips to the Boundary Waters.”

In addition to the 6-part Backcountry Angler, Presented by Bass Pro Shops, be sure to watch for complementary digital, social, and print content across the In-Fisherman, Florida Sportsman, and Game & Fish brands, and for related video shorts on GAME & FISH TV.

“Backcountry Angler,” Presented by Bass Pro Shops, is now streaming on In-Fisherman.com, In-Fisherman YouTube, MyOutdoorTV (MOTV) and Game & Fish TV.

Mike Komara Featured on the ‘Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop’ Podcast

DENVER (September 15, 2026) – On a recent episode (#37) of the Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop podcast, Ross Purnell, Publisher/Editor of Fly Fisherman Magazine, sits down with Mike Komara, a Pennsylvania fly fisherman, owner of Innovative Angling fishing guide service in Central Pennsylvania, and an important member of Fly Fishing Team USA, which is currently taking part in the 45th World Fly Fishing Championship being held Sept. 13-19 in Idaho. The Championships are organized through FIPS-Mouche (the International Sport Fly Fishing Federation), which is the fly-fishing arm of CIPS (the International Sport Fishing Confederation), the World regulating body, following the Olympic ideal, for competitive fishing in all disciplines. Annual World Championships and accompanying conservation symposiums have taken place every year since the summer of 1998. The World Championships took place in the Czech Republic in 2025, and Team USA took the Bronze, following Poland with the Silver and now three-time defending World Champion France with the Gold. Hopes are high in ’26 that Team USA will do very well with the “home field advantage,” but many talented fly fishers are descending on Idaho Falls and will be putting their skills to work on regional fisheries in the “Golden Triangle” region of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

In this podcast, Mike Komara and Purnell talk about how competitive fly fishing works, how Team USA is selected, and who will compete at the 2026 World Championships based out of Idaho Falls. Komara and Purnell also discuss each of this year’s other team members, including Team Captain Pat Weiss and anglers Jack Arnot, Cody Burgdorff, Devin Olsen, Michael Bradley and alternate Austin Shoemaker.

“So, I got started when I was really young,” Mike Komara began, in response to Purnell’s question about how his competitive fly-fishing career began. “I think I was 12 when I found out about competitive fishing, and I was 13 when I first got actively involved. There’s a great program – the U.S. Youth Fly Fishing Team – and they’re actually based in State College, so Central PA, not far from where I grew up in Pittsburgh and where I currently live. They host clinics every year across the country. I think they do one out west, down south, and in Pennsylvania, to kind of get kids interested in the sport and learn a little bit. We get a lot of kids who go to the clinics who are not necessarily even interested in competing, but they get to learn from some really good coaches and stuff like that.”

“I think last year we had almost 30 kids for two days, in Pennsylvania at least,” Komara continued, “and it was basically two kids to one instructor, so we had a lot of people there. …It’s a great program, and that’s how I got started. I did a clinic in Pennsylvania on Fishing Creek, and I met some great instructors who really helped me out along the way. Two weeks later I did my first competition. …It was a great time. I liked it, so I kept coming back for more. And, I made the U.S. Youth Team in 2016, about two years after I started. Then I went to my first Youth World Championships in 2017. I did that in 2017, 2018, 2019, in Slovenia, Poland and the Czech Republic for Youth Worlds. I aged off when I got to college and took a little bit of a forced break because of Covid, and I didn’t get a chance to make the Adult team until 2022…I made the team in February of ’24 and got to go to the World Championships in France and then again last year in the Czech Republic.”

Given Komara’s significant experience in use of the Euro nymphing often favored in international competition, Purnell was curious about Komara’s thoughts on the growing popularity of the technique among everyday fly fishers. “You know, it has become way more mainstream with the flies you see in fly shops,” said Komara. “I remember when I started you pretty much would never see a tungsten-beaded nymph in a fly shop box. You had to order it online or tie it yourself. Now, just about every fly shop has a load of them in different weights and sizes. It’s pretty cool that it’s just part of the fly-fishing journey now… It’s not as much of a specialty tactic anymore…it used to be that you’d dry fly fish, you’d indicator fish, you’d streamer fish. Now it’s dry fly fish, Euro nymph, indicator fish and streamer fish. It’s just one of the main tactics now.”

Of course, noting that Team USA will be facing a variety of water types and conditions, Purnell commented that they will need to be ready for anything. “There’s a lot of variety for sure,” continued Komara. “There will be a little bit of everything, depending on the water levels, obviously. Sometimes one thing can be a little bit more useful than the other, but you’ll see a lot of Euro nymphing in the clips of the Championships here.”

Listen to the Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop podcast, in partnership with Patagonia, G. Loomis, Mayfly Outdoors, TroutRoutes and Cigars International, on Apple Podcast, YouTube, Spotify, and at FlyFisherman.com.

It’s worth noting that the competitors fund their own participation and must be extremely passionate and dedicated to make Team USA and compete in the World Championships.

“So, I’m a guide,” Komara explained. “If you’re doing world championships and trying to make Team USA, it’s about six weeks of straight fishing days a year you need. So, it’s a lot of time off work. You really kind of have to be self-employed or pretty high up in your company with a lot of leeway to make it work. So, for the most part, all of us are self-employed. That’s a big thing. You can’t really have a 9-5 and do it. You can, but you’ve got to have the time off or a company that is [supportive]. So, probably more so than the money, that is an aspect that keeps people from making the team. …It’s practically a second job if you want to be really competitive and do well.”

Mike Komara’s guide service is in Central Pennsylvania. “Based in Bellefonte, we fish all the area’s famous limestoners,” said Komara. He also guides for bass and muskies and teaches Euro nymphing and the advanced dry fly techniques that are used in competition. During the winter, Komara guides in New Zealand. If you’re interested in fishing with Mike Komara, go to InnovativeAngling.com.

“I’m so thankful that Mike Komara found time to visit with me at the Fly Fisherman office,” said Purnell. “I’ve fished under pressure before, needing to make the perfect cast on a big fish while a guide or mentor looks on, but I’ve never fished competitively other than for fun. However, I must admit that I’m fascinated by the competition, the competitors, and their mindset, as well as the tackle and techniques that have filtered down to everyday fly fishing. You can bet that I’ll be cheering on Mike and Fly Fishing Team USA in Idaho this week and invite listeners to see how Mike Komara Demonstrates the Pitch Cast. At Shooter’s World near Tampa, Florida, Pedford gathers friends for “Nemo Arms Showcase Part 1, and Part 2.” For episode 11, he takes part in the “NWTF Conservation Hunt” in Missouri with BuckVentures, and then he finishes up his “Wyoming Grand Slam,” before adding a Gould’s gobbler in Sonora, Mexico, on “Cinco De Mayo Royal Slam.” The season wraps up hunting predators – coyotes in Kansas and on “Muck It Up,” pythons in South Florida.

“We’re so happy to have King Pedford on board at MyOutdoorTV,” said Sr. Vice President and MOTV General Manager Sean Luxton. “He has such a strong message for the next generation when it comes to connecting with the outdoors, and he not only has good footwork and hand speed, but he’s also quick with a smile, a good laugh and serious hunting fun. Sgt. Justin Dodge Talks About Choosing to Thrive and Live Your Best Life on ‘The Michael Waddell Podcast,’ Presented by REMAX OUTDOORS

Sgt. Justin Dodge and Waddell Discuss Mental, Physical and Spiritual Fitness

DENVER (September 9, 2026) – Join Host Michael Waddell as he sits down with Sgt. Justin Dodge, a 30-year veteran of the Denver Police Department (DPD) to discuss what Sgt. Dodge calls “the active pursuit of wellness.” In a horrible, freak accident where he was struck, pinned down and run over by a fire truck during the Denver Nugget’s NBA championship parade in June of 2023, Sgt. Dodge’s leg was crushed beneath the wheel of the 80,000-pound truck. The resulting severe trauma ultimately required nine surgeries and amputation of the leg below the knee. Despite the catastrophic injury, Sgt. Dodge made a miraculous recovery and returned to full-time service with the DPD’s elite Metro SWAT unit in less than a year. The inspiring story of Sgt. Dodge’s remarkable return to service through rigorous physical therapy and rehabilitation efforts is one of unbelievable determination and grit.

Sgt. Dodge’s journey of healing charted a course forward for him that ultimately led to his wanting to share his message of resiliency and wellness and to help others prepare for and get through the challenges in their own lives, and he’s our very special guest on this episode of The Michael Waddell Podcast, presented by REMAX OUTDOORS and in partnership with Cigars International. On June 15, 2023, it’s estimated that 1 million people gathered in downtown Denver for the Denver Nuggets NBA championship parade. The last fire truck in the parade carried superstar center Nikola Jokic and team owner Stanley Kroenke and family, and it’s estimated that at the end of the parade nearly 50,000 people swarmed the truck in chaotic jubilation. At one point, as the truck moved slowly forward and negotiated a tight, right-hand turn, the heel of Sgt. Dodge’s left boot was caught under one of the truck’s massive tires, and his life changed forever there at the intersection of 13th and Cherokee.

“Obviously, I’m not prepared to have my leg destroyed, disintegrate in front of me,” Sgt. Dodge began, talking about that moment. “The pain was manageable enough that I still had my wits about me to know that my life just completely changed. But I can tell you this, hand on a Bible, absolutely no questions asked, my rehab started with the truck on top of me…”

“So, there’s a Green Beret named Nick Lavery,” Sgt. Dodge continued, “He has written several books. Total stud. He’s actually an above-the-knee amputee, not a below-the-knee amputee. I had no idea who Nick was, but I remembered seeing the cover of his book. I remember seeing this guy sitting next to an armored vehicle in kit that looked very similar to our kit, and he’s on a prosthetic. And I kid you not, that image went through my head. I’m on the street. Tourniquets are what’s keeping me alive right now. And I’m already like, ‘I don’t know who Nick is, but if he can do it, well, of course, I can do it…I didn’t know the name of the book. I didn’t know Nick’s name. I didn’t know his story, I just remembered that picture and seeing a big, jacked dude in kit on a prosthetic and was like, ‘All right, if somebody has done it before me, then I can do it.’ That was what my thought process was. But it’s only because I’ve been preparing for this event for 20 years…”

In this podcast, Waddell and Sgt. Dodge go into detail about what he meant when he said, ‘preparing for this event’ through his pursuit of wellness and what he calls “prehab.”

“So, the more that you can do to make it so that you’re fit, your finances are good,” Sgt. Dodge began. “For me, I don’t drink. But, you know, I’d tell people that are out there to be very smart. I’m not going to preach about that, and I don’t preach about anything. When I get up on stage to do my keynote, I don’t do it in a preachy way. I do it in a, ‘I’ve lived this; I’ve seen this; I’ve watched this; so, these are things that I’ve done to make it so that I can be on stage to talk to you guys.’ So, through this prehab, it has basically prepared me so that I’m lying there and I was able to have the mindset to move and save my life. I had the mindset, once I was pulled out, once the tourniquets were on, to be like, ‘I’m coming back.’ So, that’s what prehab did for me. Prehab kept me alive, but then it also kept me going once I realized that I was going to live.”

The Michael Waddell Podcast is produced by Outdoor Sportsman Group and is available widely on Outdoor Channel YouTube, MyOutdoorTV, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and OutdoorChannel.com, to name a few.

While Sgt. Dodge doesn’t discuss tactical aspects of his job, he certainly emphasizes his motivation for returning to service on one of the country’s oldest full-time SWAT units.

“For us, SWAT doesn’t stand for ‘Special Weapons and Tactics,’” said Sgt. Dodge. “SWAT stands for ‘Saving Lives.’ Period. That’s our goal. That’s our mission. That’s our creed. That’s how we train. That’s how we operate. That’s the equipment we buy. That’s the personnel that we bring on. Everything. Everything. Everything is about saving lives. There’s not a dude on that team that wants to be involved in a critical incident. Not one. Not one. Even with all the gear, all the everything we have… I pray before every single op. I’ve been doing this for 20 years. There’s not a single operation that I’ve done that I haven’t prayed before. And it’s kind of cool to pray before going on an op, because after that you’re so free. Your mind is so free because you’re not having to worry about that ‘What if?’ Because, God forbid, if that truck would have completely run me over, ‘God’s got this.’ I know where I’m going. He’s going to take care of my family; He’s going to do all those things.”

“One of the things I’d love to get out there,” continued Sgt. Dodge, “because I do have 84 years of consecutive [police service] in the family. I’ve got a daughter that’s Generation Four. If people understood, there’s not a police officer in the country at this time – there may have been way back in the day – but there’s not a police officer in the country that wakes up and says, ‘You know what, I want to go get involved in a really nasty, messy critical incident today. I want to go out and see if I can get into a shooting today. I want to go out and see if something can happen where I’m either going to get hurt or somebody else is going to get hurt, I’m going to get criminally prosecuted, I’m going to make national news, I’m going to be the next one. Officers wake up every single day now – because of some of the things that have happened – and pray for just the opposite. “Please, God, give me the understanding of the situation to make it better without anything having to happen. That doesn’t always take place, but that’s one thing that I would love, as I’m in the twilight of my career, to have people understand.”

“It was such an honor to have Sgt. Justin Dodge here to visit with me,” said Waddell. “His story of recovery from catastrophic injury is incredibly inspiring, as is his message about living a life of discipline and wellness, ‘prehabbing’ to make sure that you can avoid or overcome those challenges that life inevitably will send your way. Listening to his story motivates me to do more work in my own life. I’m sure Justin and I will talk again soon, and I will be adding his Heavy Victory Podcast to my regular listening list.”

The Michael Waddell Podcast releases new episodes every other week.

Waddell’s story began in the backwoods of Booger Bottom, Georgia, where he grew up surrounded by nature, family, and a love for the outdoors. A self-proclaimed “rowdy redneck,” his passion for hunting and storytelling led him to win a Realtree turkey-calling contest, which launched his career in the outdoor industry. From guiding and filming hunts to creating hit shows like Realtree Road Trips and Bone Collector, Waddell has become a beloved figure in the outdoor world.
