Chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois Recognized for Efforts in Lifestyle Visual Media Category

DENVER (June 24, 2026) – MyOutdoorTV, the Outdoor Channel, and the entire Outdoor Sportsman Group (OSG) would like to congratulate Chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois and his hard-working team at Duck Camp Dinners for the recent recognition by America’s most prestigious culinary arts organization. Now in Season 4 of the popular series that premieres on Outdoor Channel before migrating to OSG’s leading global outdoor streaming platform, every season of Duck Camp Dinners now can be found on MyOutdoorTV (MOTV). Chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois has proven to be a master storyteller, and every episode he takes viewers into the heart of Louisiana’s wetlands, exploring the traditions and challenges of the region while bringing its “swamp floor pantry” and bold Cajun recipes to life.

When expressing his thoughts about receiving the James Beard Award for Lifestyle Broadcast Media, Chef Bourgeois had the following to say:

“Winning a James Beard Award has been a lifelong dream of mine, one I thought I had left behind when I stepped away from my full-time restaurant career in 2020 to pursue creating media that is deeply personal to me. Season 1 of Duck Camp Dinners was created in six days with very little budget and a handful of people who believed in the idea. As the creator, I had no idea what DCD would become as the concept grew through four seasons.
If I’m being honest, the idea of winning this award always made me uncomfortable.
The show was created and still strives to tell stories about people who weave the outdoors into their lives and explore God’s resources on this earth with curiosity, gratitude and purpose. Sometimes it isn’t pretty, but it is always honest. While I may have received this award, it truly belongs to everyone whose stories have been told and untold, who has supported this show, and who sees their way of life reflected in it.”

Be sure to check out Season 4 and all the great Duck Camp Dinners episodes streaming now on MyOutdoorTV. Chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois begins his fourth season in Louisiana’s Atchafalaya Delta at a new camp with plans for a weekend of work, running crab traps, setting jug lines and, of course, duck hunting – and it’s all capped off with a porch feast of blue crabs, duck spaghetti and trout. The second episode, “Texas Tour: Hall’s Bayou & El Campo,” introduces the series that caught the attention of the James Beard Foundation. The series continues with “Texas Tour: Rockport – Flounder & Redheads,” “Texas Tour: Refugio – Wild Duck Pho & Mixed Bag,” “Texas Tour: Lubbock – Cackling Geese and Tex Mex,” “Texas Tour: Lubbock – Sandhill Cranes and Country Music” and “Texas Tour: East Texas Wingshooting and Louisiana Redfish.”

About Chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois
A proud son of Louisiana, Chef Jean-Paul grew up among the bayous, ingraining in him a deep appreciation for Southern food and culture. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York, his career has been shaped by his passion for combining classic culinary techniques with the authenticity of his Cajun roots. Beyond cooking, Chef Jean-Paul is a natural storyteller, captivating audiences with his ability to connect food to place and heritage. His love for the outdoors and dedication to preserving Louisiana’s wetlands are evident in every episode of Duck Camp Dinners.

Andy Mill Featured on the ‘Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop’ Podcast

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is OSG-Email-Signature_ALL-LOGOS_2024.png

DENVER (June 23, 2026) – On the latest episode (#33) of the Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop podcast, Ross Purnell, Editor/Publisher of Fly Fisherman Magazine, sits down with one amazing fly fisherman – Andy Mill. A world-class skier who was one of America’s top downhill racers in the 1970s and early ‘80s, the U.S. Champion in ’76, who skied four times in the World Championships (’74, ’76, ’78 and ’80), and twice represented the United States in the Olympics, finishing sixth in Innsbruck in ’76 despite a severe training injury to his foot, and finishing 16th overall in 1980 at Lake Placid, New York. Mill was a regular on the World Cup Circuit until a career-ending skiing accident in Switzerland in ’81, and afterwards he went on to a very successful, 20-year TV and broadcast career covering World Cup skiing and the Winter Olympics for CBS and other networks. Over his career as a skier, Mill certainly proved that he had the heart of a champion; however, another passion burned deep in his heart, stemming from his childhood in Aspen, Colorado – fly fishing.

In 1960, the Mill Family moved to Aspen, where as a youth Andy Mill excelled at a variety of sports – skiing, of course – but also at football and baseball. A chance meeting with fly fishing pioneer Ernie Schwiebert while Mill was riding his bike to baseball practice along the Roaring Fork River would have as big an impact on his future as the slopes of the Aspen Snowmass.

“One day riding my bicycle to baseball practice I saw this fly line going back and forth [making a motion with his finger] and I thought, ‘Wow, look how cool that is,’ so I rode my bike over and it was Ernie Schwiebert. He was in Aspen on behalf of the Country Store, which was a fly tying, fly fishing little store, and he was giving fly casting demonstrations, and I went over there and after the session he taught me how to cast. Ten years later he was back in town, and we found each other, and now he’s sleeping on my couch. I was living in Basalt. Now I’m 17 or 18 years old, and he’s sleeping on my couch, and we were fishing the Fryingpan [River]. I had my vice, and he was tying flies on my Vega. I had a little Vega, and Ernie Schwiebert was tying flies and wading them out to me in the middle of the river. And then, a number of years later, I was fishing in Alaska with Ernie. So, Ernie was the great Ernie Schwiebert, and we became pretty tight and traveled together a little bit. And then, Chuck Fothergill taught me how to tie flies when I was 11-12 years old with the Wright brothers – Jonathan, Flip, and Chapin Wright – and Jonathan, as you know, was climbing with Chouinard and was killed in an avalanche. Aspen was really fly-fishing ground zero there for quite a few years, because Chuck Fothergill had a store and a lot of people started fly fishing. But when I started, there wasn’t anybody on the river, and I loved it!”

“So, when Covid hit,” Mill continued, “I had a chance to show my son Nicky what I grew up with because there was not one airplane at the airport. There was nobody driving. The world was shut down. And I had a chance to show Nicky what I grew up with on the Roaring Fork, when we went down and could go anywhere we wanted and never saw another person. And then we got into the Keys before – it was shut down for the whole month of May – we got into the Keys and we were tarpon fishing, and we never saw another boat from Bow Channel to Key West, 17 miles, maybe 21 miles, never saw another boat for like two weeks, and every tarpon you saw was high and happy and wanted to bite your fly… The best day we had, we hooked 18 tarpon and caught 12, on the oceanside.”

“My relationship with fishing has kind of changed,” confided Mill, “because of what I’ve seen. You know, I’m an older guy now. I still love to trout fish, but on my terms, and the fact that I really don’t care about catching a little fish anymore. I’d rather walk the river and look for a big fish that might be feeding under the surface and try to target him. Or, during a caddis fly hatch, get a bite but just don’t set the hook, and you just try to get a few bites, smoke a cigar and go home. But fly fishing was as important to me as a young kid as skiing was.”

Listen to the Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop podcast, in partnership with Patagonia, G. Loomis, Mayfly Outdoors, TroutRoutes and Cigars International, on Apple Podcast, YouTube, Spotify, and at FlyFisherman.com.

After Mill’s catastrophic ski injury, he went into the broadcast booth and held numerous other jobs related to his skiing career, but he wasn’t happy because he no longer was chasing a goal. “My goal in life was never to be a TV show host or to be the director of skiing. My whole life was like trying to win baseball games or go catch a fish or try to win ski races, and now my whole life was flatlined. And then the Outdoor Life Network called and asked me to do some specials. So, I hosted some of these specials for them and they enjoyed my work, and then they said, ‘Hey, how about hosting and producing a fishing show.’ And I said, ‘I have no time at all.’ But I started to think a little more closely about it and my life at the time, and I was making really good money. And I called them back and I said, ‘I’ll tell you what I’ll do. You match what I make as a skier, all my contracts, all my clothing sponsors, skis, boots, bindings, what I was making from the ski company and the TV stuff. You match that, and give me a five-year contract, and I will change careers. I will leave skiing.’ And they did…and we traveled the world for seven years producing great shows, and then I got involved in fishing tournaments in the Keys, but that basically changed my life in such a giant way because now I was having fun again, I was chasing stuff. I was fishing with the best anglers in the world catching these giant fish.”

During the 1990s, Mill went on to host and produce over 90 episodes of Sportsman’s Journal with Andy Mill for the Outdoor Life Network (later Versus Network) and he fly fished around the world. Additionally, he has won a dozen saltwater fly-fishing tournaments, including 11 major tarpon tournaments (the most ever by a single fisherman), and he also won tournament titles for bonefish and permit, making him the only angler to win a tarpon/bonefish/permit tournament on fly. Mill’s competitive dominance duly earned him membership in both the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust Hall of Fame (Class of ’22) and the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame (Class of ’23).

When asked about the end of his skiing career and making the move to fishing, Mill simply said, “Life moves on. Life is about surviving, right. Life is about recovery. It doesn’t always go well. We learn more from our mistakes and our failures than we do when we win.”

“I’m so grateful for the time Andy Mill was able to spend with me,” said Purnell. “I have been a fan throughout his career, and I have to say that I’m amazed at his skiing career, and I’m probably more amazed at his fishing career, and his tournament accomplishments on the saltwater flats that may never be matched. His book, “A Passion for Tarpon,” is an authoritative must-read, and you can bet that I’ll continue to tune into the Mill House Podcast that he hosts with his son Nicky.”

Don’t miss Monte Burke’s feature article, “The Many Lives of Andy Mill,” in the August-September 2026 edition of Fly Fisherman magazine, on sale Tuesday, July 7.

Available on Apple Podcast, YouTube, Spotify, and at FlyFisherman.com the latest episode of Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop podcast is a must-listen for fly fishing enthusiasts of all levels who want to stay informed.

Jesse Wiggins and Waddell Discuss Fishing Instincts and Forward-Facing Sonar

DENVER (June 17, 2026) – Join Host Michael Waddell as he sits down with popular Major League Fishing (MLF) pro bass angler Jesse Wiggins, who currently ranks in the Top 20 on MLF’s Bass Pro Tour (BPT). Wiggins has fished 90+ MLF tournaments, stood on top of the podium 5 times, finished in the Top 10 nearly a third of the time and has more than $1.2 million in career winnings. Wiggins first qualified for the Elite Series of the Bass Pro Shops B.A.S.S. Circuit in 2016 and fished the complete series the next season. In an 18-month period (2016-2017), he won three Opens, and his first national tour-level win was at the MLF’s BPT Stage 4 on the Lake of the Ozarks in 2022, and he’s our special guest on The Michael Waddell Podcast, presented by Spandau Arms and in partnership with Folds of Honor, Cigars International and Poncho Outdoors. Born and raised in northcentral Alabama on the edge of the Bankhead National Forest and the massive Smith Lake fishery, formed when the Alabama Power Company dammed the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River, Wiggins and his two brothers were taught to fish by their father on those local waters, and Wiggins claims to love deer and turkey hunting almost as much as he loves bass fishing.

In this podcast, Jesse Wiggins and Waddell cover a wide variety of topics but focus, naturally, on Wiggins’ competitive bass-fishing career, which started for his brother Jordan and him when they were very young because their father loved to bass fish, even fished competitively in some local tournaments, and he got the boys involved when they were small children. Wiggins can’t remember when he caught his first fish, but he fished in his first tournament when he was just five years old.

“Hunting and fishing was our life,” began Wiggins. “Me and my brother started fishing tournaments when we got into 9th, 10th, 11th Grade, and it was like, we could either go hang out all night or we could go back and tie jigs or build lures, or get a boat working somehow so we could go fishing Saturday morning. …I remember when we were younger we’d fish Friday night, go home and sleep a couple of hours, and then get up and fish the Saturday morning tournament, and then fish the Tuesday night tournament. It just kept us out of so much trouble because we had some freedom and could have done whatever, but we always chose to just go fishing – or hunting – either one. I look back and think, we’re so lucky to make it out just loving fishing. …A lot of people listening grew up the same way. That’s what I try to promote – hunting and fishing. It keeps people out of trouble, no doubt in my mind. It just grew to be a passion, and we [Wiggins and his brother] took it to a way bigger level than I ever thought was possible!”

Now that Wiggins has found consistent success at the highest level of professional bass fishing, people often question whether he ever gets tired of fishing. “The fishing part is fun,” said Wiggins, “that ain’t work! Being gone [from home] is the worst part – the truck-driving part of it. That’s my least favorite part of it. People don’t realize that we might be gone six or seven days fishing, but we’re also gone three more days traveling a lot of times. It’s that kind of thing that people don’t realize. But, it’s just worth it. I always say, like, speaking of New York and smallmouth…you drive to New York, and it’s 18 hours from home to get there, and all you can think about is that first four- or five-pound smallmouth you hook into, and as soon as you get there and hook it, you’re like, ‘Okay, it was worth it! It was worth it!’ It would be just like going hunting somewhere and, as soon as you get to sling that first arrow, you think, ‘Okay, it was worth it! It was worth all that waiting.’ It’s the same feeling. But I’m lucky to get to do it, for sure. I’m extremely blessed, lucky and all that good stuff.”

The Michael Waddell Podcast is produced by Outdoor Sportsman Group and is available widely on Outdoor Channel YouTube, MyOutdoorTV, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and OutdoorChannel.com, to name a few.

“It was a lot of sacrifice,” said Wiggins, when asked about what it took to get started. “Don’t get me wrong, I’d sacrifice [to do it again] tomorrow, for sure. But like I said before, all the the high school night life, all that was off the table. You sacrificed that to be fishing. People would always get mad at us for fishing and winning [maybe mad isn’t the right word], and they’d ask how we were winning – We fished! That’s what we did. I make the joke that our summer job the year we got out of high school – well, my brother was one year younger – but the year he got out of high school, I’d already been out, but our summer job was fishing all those night tournaments. ‘As long as we win, we can make way more money winning these than we can working.’” Wiggins thought. “This is way more fun…”

“My Grandpa built houses,” continued Wiggins, “and that’s what we did in the summer. We helped him build, and I hated every second of it. I’m not scared to admit it. I’ll tell him; I hated it. It was decent money, and he needed help. Shout out to my Grandpa – he built every house that my family lives in! …But that’s what I grew up doing, and I knew I hated that, so I was like, if we could fish… and then we won some money those early years, and I’m like, ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever seen – getting paid money to go fishing.’ …I knew pro angling was a thing, I was a fan, but I didn’t think it was possible [to make a living at it]. I didn’t know anybody who did it, and I didn’t have a clue how to get there. We just went fishing in tournaments and wanted to win.”

“When I first realized that if we can catch fish, we can make a living doing this, I just kept on,” continued Wiggins. “I kept making my way up through the smaller ranks. I just fished around the house. I figured, as long as I can make money fishing, that’s the money I’m going to spend fishing. So, I never went into any kind of debt doing it…I just nickel and dimed my way up to where I could get new stuff – I didn’t even have a boat that had a fishfinder on it until 2012, and I started fishing professionally in 2016, so I felt like I was so behind…but it just seemed like I’d keep catching fish in those tournaments and just keep doing good.”

“Half the time the motor wouldn’t even crank on our boat [an old Johnson 200],” confided Wiggins, “and at night before the tournament, we’d have to figure out a way to get the boat working, floating, batteries charging, getting them off other vehicles, charging them. We didn’t have any money. We were just doing what we could. We knew that if we could get the boat in the water and it would float, we’d have a chance. …That’s what me and my brother grew up doing, and he fishes the circuit lower than mine right now, and he’s trying to qualify for our circuit. He’s better than I am, in my opinion. He can catch ‘em!” Wiggins added with a smile.

When asked what advice he has for young people who dream about fishing professionally, Wiggins had the following to say: “For sure, now, the way it’s set up with high school fishing and college fishing, it would be hard not to do some of that…especially if colleges will cover travel and stuff to the tournaments. That’s a sure-fire way to get started. Start in high school, and then go to college, and you can fish and get your degree. And once you get out there, you may decide that this isn’t for you, being out on the road and doing it; so, you don’t want to just forget college. …If you grew up like I did – not a bunch of money – I’d strongly suggest doing the college fishing route. Because you’re going to get so much experience, and it’s going to be on the college. A lot of the colleges will pay for housing and give you gas money. A lot of it is paid for, so that’s certainly a good route to take because you’re going to network, you’ll get with people… But, if you’re fortunate enough to have a dad or parents or grandparents who will pay for you to be out there, Man, then you just have to be on the water. You have to get in those tournament settings, and get your mindset in the tournament mindset, where it’s competition… Go to lakes you haven’t been to, learn them, get in tournaments on those lakes, and just learn them. That’s if you have the means, the funds. If Daddy can support you to get out there, like I said, I’m totally jealous, I wish I could have done that because I feel like I had the work ethic but just didn’t have the funds. But do that. Get out there. Fish tournaments. Get out there and learn!”

“If you start catching them regionally around your house,” Wiggins continued, “then work your way up. Even if you’re having your bill footed for you. Work your way up. You’ll have the base of knowledge that you can always fall back on. Even now, fishing professionally, I [have got to try] different stuff, whatever bait is supposed to be hot for that lake, but if it doesn’t work out, I’m still going back to my Shaky Head and my Chatterbait, the stuff that I’m going to use no matter; it’s always tied on. So, you get your confidence – you build your confidence when you’re younger and learning how to do it, and then you just work your way up. There are avenues now, both leagues – Bassmasters and Major League Fishing – have avenues to start from when you’re young and you can work your way up like I did.”

“I’m so grateful that Jesse Wiggins found the time to visit with me,” said Waddell, “and go fishing with me, too! I’m so proud of what he has accomplished. He comes from a blue-collar background, and he’s a real scrapper who is living his American dream catching fish. I’m excited to see where his career goes from here, and knowing him and his work ethic, I won’t be surprised to see him reach all his goals, whether it’s tournament wins, ‘Angler of the Year’ recognition, or ‘Father of the Year.’”

The Michael Waddell Podcast releases new episodes every other week.

Waddell’s story began in the backwoods of Booger Bottom, Georgia, where he grew up surrounded by nature, family, and a love for the outdoors. A self-proclaimed “rowdy redneck,” his passion for hunting and storytelling led him to win a Realtree turkey-calling contest, which launched his career in the outdoor industry. Will Jimeno Tells How He Found the ‘Sunrise Through The Darkness’ on The Bowhunter Podcast

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is OSG-Email-Signature_ALL-LOGOS_2024.png

DENVER (June 11, 2026) – The Bowhunter Podcast, in partnership with Poncho Outdoors, recently sat down for an incredibly inspiring conversation with bowhunter, retired New York/New Jersey Port Authority (PAPD) police officer, 9/11 Survivor and American hero Will Jimeno, who was one of the few to be pulled alive from the rubble of New York’s Twin Towers following that tragic terror attack 25 years ago this September. The son of Columbian immigrants who brought him to the United States when he was just two years old, Jimeno grew up in a family trying to live their American dream in suburban New Jersey, and after school he joined the U.S. Navy, and upon fulfilling that service obligation, he attended community college to study law enforcement and then applied to attend the PAPD Police Academy. Jimeno was a graduated member of the Academy’s Centennial Class and new police officer working at the Port Authority’s Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan that fateful day in 2001.

“That morning, my job was to basically look at the doorways of the building that I was in front of – what we have in the mornings and the afternoons is ‘the rush’ – in the morning people are coming into New York City and in the evening they’re leaving, and I got to tell you, it’s something. If you’ve never been to New York City, it’s really something. It’s thousands upon thousands of people just coming from New Jersey, Connecticut, Upstate New York, other parts of the country, and it’s just thousands of people. It’s overwhelming, but I grew up around that, so I’m used to it. I was actually facing the doorway, and I have an awning above me, and I think it was about 8:45 when I kinda looked to my right, and once that awning stopped you could see the sky, and on the corner was Sargeant Ross with two fellow officers, Pat McInerny and Eric Sanchez, and they were standing there, and I just happened to look over there, and all of a sudden I saw a shadow cover the whole intersection of 42nd and 5th Avenue, and if you’ve never been to New York City, an intersection is really large, so this shadow just covered it for a split second, and I thought that was odd, but it’s New York City, and I couldn’t really hear anything because the traffic was behind me, so I just went back to my job. But shortly after that our radios crackled and they asked us all to come back to the police desk…”

He didn’t realize it at the time, but Jimeno had seen the passing shadow of American Flight 11 as it flew toward the World Trade Center (WTC) North Tower. Back at headquarters, he saw the TV coverage and knew instantly that it had to be a terrorist attack. Jimeno quickly called his wife, Allison, who was very pregnant at the time, and then he jumped on a bus headed straight to the WTC’s smoking North Tower. Newly trained in the use of Scott Air-Paks, once on the scene Jimeno donned his gear and joined two other Academy grads – Antonio “A-Rod” Rodrigues and Dominick Pezzulo – to follow Emergency Service Unit Sgt. John McLoughlin into WTC Building 5.

Because of his vast experience and extensive knowledge of the World Trade Center complex, Sgt. McLoughlin was the right man to follow. As Jimeno and the team pushed a cart full of rescue equipment from Building 5 into a corridor leading to North Tower, the hallway began to shudder. “That’s when we heard a humongous boom! …I turned around to where we’d come from, [the team was nearly to the lobby of Tower 2] and all I could see was a fireball the size of a house. Remember what I said about following someone in who knows what they’re doing so your chances of getting out are better? Well, at that moment, I’m holding onto my helmet and looking up, and everything is shaking like an earthquake, and Sgt. McLoughlin yelled, ‘Run toward the freight elevator!’ I didn’t know those buildings. I had been there like three times for protests. Sgt. McLoughlin had helped set up the security after the ’93 bombing. It was a miracle that we stopped in front of the doorway. So, we ran. Dominick started running toward the elevator, and I saw Sgt. McLoughlin behind me. And, that’s when I asked myself, ‘What did you get yourself into?’

“…The light started flickering,” continued Jimeno, “and I could see brown stuff coming down, which I now know was from the Tower coming down. So, as Tower 2 was coming down, to show his [Sgt. McLoughlin’s] experience, if you see a building coming down, you’ll see debris going in four directions, and one of those directions was coming right at us, so Sgt. McLoughlin actually saw the wall of debris coming toward us and in a split second he thought, ‘What do they do in the Middle East? They’ll blow something up, let the first responders come in; kill them again.’ So, he thought it was a car bomb. So he said, ‘Gotta get to the freight elevator; get around the freight elevator because the beams and shaft could deflect the explosion.’ You talk about experience!”

“So, we’re running. Dominick started to turn and I followed Dominick,” continued Jimeno, “and that’s when something big picked me up, threw me on my back at a 45-degree angle, and I can’t even explain it. It’s like a million freight trains coming down on you, and the first thing you do as a police officer, your first line of defense, is your communications, so I went for my radio, which is on my left lapel, and I’m yelling ‘813!’ which was our code for, ‘I’m in trouble. Everybody come!’ And I’m yelling ‘813! Officers down!’ and debris is hitting me, concrete is hitting me, something hits my helmet so hard – I had a chinstrap on – it ripped my helmet off and all I could do was cover up after I lost my radio. It seemed like it lasted forever, and then – shush! – silence.”

At first it was pitch black, but as the dust settled a dim light shown through an opening about 30 feet above Jimeno, but he was pinned down, Dominick was struggling to free himself so he could help the others, and Sgt. McLoughlin was sealed out of view behind a slab of concrete. They were all trapped in what rescuers later described as “a cocoon of concrete,” and it was only the beginning of their struggle for survival.

Whether you’re familiar with Will Jimeno’s story or not, this is one podcast that is absolutely worth your time, and whatever your personal challenges may be, you will find encouragement in this story of triumph over trajedy.

This episode is now available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and Podbean. Watch the full episode here. Additionally, pick up the latest issue of Bowhunter Magazine on newsstands or subscribe.

“What an honor it was to spend an hour with 9/11 Survivor Will Jimeno,” said Host Christian Berg. “He’s much too humble to admit it, but he’s a true American hero, not only for his example of selfless service that September morning, but also for his example of how to live afterwards, to work through his physical and psychological pain to be a loving husband and father and to faithfully honor and respect his fellow first responders who gave the ultimate sacrifice. I’m also thankful that he has been a longtime friend of the Bowhunter brand and that he has contributed to our TV and magazine efforts, and I look forward to his sharing many more bowhunting stories in the years to come. To learn more, check out the new book, “Sunrise Through The Darkness,” which Will Jimeno co-authored with Michael Moats and is available now on Amazon.com.

Carter Andrews Featured on the ‘Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop’ Podcast

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is OSG-Email-Signature_ALL-LOGOS_2024.png

DENVER (June 9, 2026) – On the latest episode (#32) of the Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop podcast, Ross Purnell, Editor/Publisher of Fly Fisherman Magazine, sits down with world-renowned angler, Carter Andrews, the longtime host of The Obsession of Carter Andrews who also happens to be launching a new, more in-depth, hour-long version of his obsession called Gone Fishing with Carter Andrews – coming soon to the Outdoor Channel! For this podcast episode, Purnell is Andrews’ guest at his home office and farm near Vero Beach, Florida, and the timing couldn’t be better, because Andrews also was welcoming the American Saltwater Guides Association to his farm for the weekend as they held their annual Lefty Kreh Tie Fest event and fundraiser.

Andrews grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and he got an early start fishing conventional tackle for bass on local waters, but his family had a cabin at Elkmont in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and that’s where he discovered the joys of catching trout on a fly rod. Andrews and family made the move to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in the late 1980s, and he called that area his home for more than three decades. Andrews made a reputation for himself in the Western fly fishing scene as a fisherman and guide for giant trout, and he went on to win the prestigious Jackson Hole One Fly several times and later became a key member of the U.S. Fly Fishing Team (now Fly Fishing Team USA). The travel related to competitive fishing introduced Andrews to the world of saltwater angling, first in the Bahamas, then to Panama, and eventually to destinations all around the globe.

What’s immediately clear is that, given his incredible experience fishing and guiding and filming around the world – most recently in the Galapagos Islands – Carter Andrews has an abiding respect for angling of all kinds, and for fish of all kinds, whether gamefish or otherwise.

“You, know, as long as we talk about that, and you talk about Rocky Mountain trout fishing, which is near and dear to me,” started Carter Andrews, “I lived 32 years in Jackson Hole. Guided for Jack Dennis. Jeff Currier gave me my first job in fishing,” Andrews continued [getting emotional], “and that’s why I’m here today. I got to hang out with some of the best… Imagine, I lived there in 1988 and got to see Jackson Hole, where I was fishing with… I traveled the show circuit with Jeff [Currier], Jack Dennis, Mike Lawson and Gary LaFontaine – founder of The Traveling Fly Fishermen. And so that was what I got to cut my teeth on. It was just exceptional.”

Listen to the Fly Fisherman Loop to Loop podcast, in partnership with Patagonia, G. Loomis, Mayfly Outdoors, TroutRoutes and Cigars International, on Apple Podcast, YouTube, Spotify, and at FlyFisherman.com.

“I watched the South Fork of the Snake go from – it’s still probably one of the greatest trout fisheries in the country, and it has so much pressure it’s unbelieveable – but I was there when they built the new boat ramp at the access there at South Fork Lodge…that went from a parking lot that maybe took 20 trailers to a parking lot that now…takes 150 boats. But, I’m going to tell you that in the beginning, we started fishing that river – and there were plenty of people who fished it before me – but the average size fish, the average, was a solid 18 inches. Yes, you did catch 16s and 14s, but there were so many good fish that you very rarely caught fish smaller, and on any given day you could catch a half-dozen or a dozen fish in that 19-22 inch range.”

“The average fish on the river right now is 14 inches, maybe,” continued Andrews. “Yes, you do catch your 18s and 20s and bigger ones, but we’re talking about the days of 40 and 50 fish a day, dry fly fishing – it was one of the greatest dry fly rivers; it’s now a lot of nymphing – but that impact on the fishery, I believe, is truly due to the amount of anglers, and I want everybody out there enjoying it, but it’s the amount of anglers and the mortality on those fish – mishandling.”

“Every 18-inch fish wants to get a picture of it,” Andrews added, “every one of them. Even a guide properly holding it, maybe the net under it, it drops in the bottom of the boat – shit happens! – it flops around, yes, you get it back in the water. I’ve done it myself. But, I just think we go back to fish handling, fish respect and all those things.”

“And I don’t know what the real answer is,” Andrews admitted. “Just be as careful as you can whenever you can, because we’ve got more people fishing than ever before, we have better equipment, we have more advanced technology and we’re, from a conventional side of things, we’re blistering fish at a pace that we’ve never touched before. And I think you have more and more people enjoying fly fishing…probably the most conservative group of fishing there is and primarily advocating catch-and-release and everything like that, but we still want to, because of social media and everything…to [make sure] a big part of it is a good release.”

“I’m a strong advocate for wild trout. I mean, I certainly get native trout, but we as man have [messed up] so many different things that if a species is there and existing really well as a wild trout, just let it be, just let it be, because we have already messed up,” Andrews pled. “I mean the South Fork of the Snake is a prime example. They’re trying to get all of the rainbows out of the South Fork. Well, they’ve already bastardized the cutthroat that’s in that river so bad. That’s not the original Snake River Finespotted Cutthroat. That’s not the same cutthroat. Yes, some of them are, but that’s not the same cutthroat that’s in the river up above. It was the same river, but they put the Palisades Reservoir in the middle. Those aren’t the same trout. They want to classify Yellowstone Cutthroat and the Snake River Finespotted Cutthroat as the same fish. They don’t even look the same. They don’t even stay in the same water. They don’t cohabit. Nothing is the same about them, yet they say they’re the same species. So that cutthroat has been so bastardized, and they’re trying to get rid of the rainbows.

“Here are a couple things to think about,” Andrews continued, “and I’m not saying it doesn’t change a little bit, but in general, cutthroat are tributary spawners. They go up the creeks. Those rainbows, they’re all spawning in the river. You can go see the colonies of rainbows spawning. They’re not spawning in the same places those cutthroats are… Everywhere else, rainbow trout are prized. There’s a river that runs into the South Fork of the Snake River, runs into it just about 60 miles below the dam. It’s called the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River. The Henry’s Fork is Idaho’s prized trophy rainbow trout fishery. So, you’ve got two rivers that come together…one of them they’re protecting the rainbows and the other they’re killing the rainbows. Now, there’s a real good reason to have a true native trout fishery, but the stuff that we’re talking about is [different], with the added pressure that the South Fork experiences with the load of boats that are out there and everything else – manage it as a trout fishery. These are all my opinions,” Andrews finished “and everybody is entitled to their own opinions, but make that [trout fishing] experience even better.”

“It was such a pleasure to visit with Carter Andrews,” said Purnell. “So many of the places where he has fished are on my bucket list, and I cannot wait to watch his new program, Gone Fishing with Carter Andrews, premiering Monday, July 6, at 9 p.m. ET on Outdoor Channel. Fans can expect to see more of his obsession, not only for great fishing but for the people and places that make those great fishing experiences possible.”
